At first, I thought that Gabriel was being a good person. He didn't want his actions to reflect badly on his family. He took a closer look at Pandora when she declined his offer. He couldn't understand her reasoning, and started to get to know her better. The more he learned about her, the more he admired her.
I was really surprised by his about face concerning Pandora. He had spent years avoiding marriage and now he is hooked up to a stranger. I guess he got his ego deflated when she didn't want to marry him. That was definitely a new situation for him.
I think deep down Gabriel was looking for what his parents have and initially thought Pandora was just like the other debutants looking for a husband. When she visited his family’s estate and really got to know her, he was intrigued. Sebastian’s coaching didn’t hurt either. Pandora was the first to excite him, non sexually.
I was very surprised by his 180-degree turn in attitude. He went from trying to find a way out of the marriage to begging Pandora to marry him. He was ready to smooth over all of her misgivings if she would marry him. I believe she was different from all of the debutantes who were shoved in his direction. I also think she may have reminded her of his mother, another wallflower.
