Thank you, David. I will consider your advice, though I doubt whether I will be making any changes, since the Jane Digby series has proven to be far more successful than I anticipated. The installment that you read (which is the first of the series) has been chosen by Amazon as a Prime selection. It should be available to Prime members next month, according to the KDP representatives that have contacted me.

I have learned from these review groups how wildly varied judgments of fiction can be - subjectivity is a large part of the process. For instance, look at the reviews for any bestseller. Most (if not all) receive their share of one or two star reviews. I have found that an author should always listen to well-intended advice, though not always heed it. Thanks again for taking the time to read and review my work.

Congratulations on your success! It's terrific that Amazon Prime has chosen your book for promotion.

Maybe its more direct style is just what readers want nowadays rather than a complex, Baroque-style journey into the past.

Nothing succeeds like success, so since it is well-received in general then I'd say maybe it's already in its perfect form.
