Goodreads removing multiple features

Sad, even though of these the only feature I was using regularly nowadays is the owned books/condition details
If you are interested in a more powerful tool for cataloguing your books I suggest LibraryThing: it used to be paid membership but not anymore, now it's 100% free. I have accounts here and there, Goodreads is mostly for groups and social (I think it's unlikely they will remove those), LibraryThing for cataloguing.

Granted Goodreads only makes money from giveaways and ads. I and others have long said that Amazon needs to devote a lot more money and staff to Goodreads, since they put it on every Kindle device and appear to want people to use it.

"
An example would be
Jane Eyre
below the Want to Read button it says "more photos (18)."
It's hard to know which photos on a book are allowed and which aren't, except covers aren't allowed as Moloch mentioned.

I am grateful that they're not removing the ability to upload the actual book covers. Listopia seems popular, so I hope it's never on the chopping block. Gosh, I have like 800 lists! And I don't know what we'd do without our groups. There don't seem to be any other active sites for lost book searches.
Well, trivia seemed popular too. It makes me wonder what other things am I wasting time on now because they're going to be gone in 6 months. Are they going to remove settings and characters from the book data? Remove the "My Books" feature? Remove the stats page? Disable the ability to sort different categories on the stats page? Remove the infinite scroll?
They've already removed the functionality for so many features over the years, and a lot of it was done very sneakily, with no announcements.

On the contrary, there's
Librarything's "Name that Book" https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/...
AbeBooks "Booksleuth" https://forums.abebooks.com/discussio...
Reddit's "What's That Book Called" https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthatbook/
I use all of them as well as here and have had success with all of them.

I use the "Recommended by" field of the book review to remind me where I heard about the book. E.g. New York Times, New Yorker, New York Review of Books, Atlantic, a particular podcast, another book, another author, etc.
GR intended us to fill the field with a GR friend who recommended it but I use it in a way that's more useful to me.
Now that's gone.

Yes, I used it that way too

Someone quoted me the following from the librarians' group:
"As of June 20th 2022, Goodreads members who do not have Librarian or Author status will no longer be able to manually add book editions to the Goodreads catalog. While individual members have had the ability to add book records to the Goodreads catalog in the past, it has long been a source of book records that do not meet Goodreads standards for a valid book record, duplicate book records, and other low-quality book records. The member Help article will be updated to inform members that they must post in the Librarians Group to request the addition of new book records, and that this will ensure new book records meet Goodreads catalog inclusion and policy standards. Please note that our automated import feeds will continue to create new editions. There are currently no planned changes to that process."
So much for being able to catalog all the books I read. There are a few bad apples among the librarians who add things wrong and screw up books when making changes. I don't trust them to add books I could have added myself. Also, the additional delays caused by more librarian workload will mean days will go by where I forget half of what I wanted to say about the book before it gets added.
I'm going to get rid of several categories of books (and their reviews) that I've got cataloged here, because I won't be able to keep them updated. But I'll keep the categories associated with my active groups.

There are several Librarians (including myself) on this thread. You can always post here and I'll see if I can add the book in question for you.
I don't trust any website to keep a permanent, accurate record of my books. I started a spreadsheet eons ago and I've kept it up to date. Websites will come and go. Goodreads will not last forever. (Hopefully Excel will....)
I remember MySpace... One day I returned to find the site completely redesigned and everyone's content deleted. All gone. Lesson (from an older person): Save your data, kids.
Reminder:
"As of July 5, 2022, Goodreads will no longer support new creative writing. All creative writing will be removed from Goodreads on SEPTEMBER 1, 2022. If you’ve added creative writing to Goodreads that you’d like to keep, you can download it by requesting your Goodreads data . For more information, visit our help center ."

There are also features I use which will be removed, no big ones, but Goodreads will be poorer without them nonetheless. And then there is no telling, who will leave and deprive us of their work.

I know that a lot of discussion is around what they are removing. But since they seem to be notifying well in advance that you can request/get your data, I am not as concerned by that.
My concern is about how they plan to overhaul the navigability/look and feel of the site. I saw the beta version of the book page and I was not a fan. I gave feedback but not sure if any of my concerns were shared by other users giving feedback and/or if they'll make it to the final cut.

It's there for me. (shrugs)

Is listopia one of the features they are removing? I had just decided that every book I read I would add to at least one list, at least until the end of the year.

If they get rid of Listopia, I will cry. I've devoted 9 years to building up these lists.

It is still not rolled out to everyone yet.
I doubt they will get rid of the lists. Apparently it is just not possible to see what list a book is on...I haven't gotten the new page yet either.

How are people supposed to find the lists if not from the book page? Very few people are going to check the Listopia main page. There's no purpose to the lists otherwise, which makes me worry that GR is going to axe them.

"As part of our dedication to improving Goodreads, we are phasing out a number of features in order to focus on the ones our members use most, and continue to improve the overall Goodreads experience. As of July 5, 2022, Goodreads will no longer support the ability to create new content for the book reviews recommendations/recommenders section, favorite authors list, creative writing, the condition and details about owned books, friend stories, trivia, quizzes, and adding additional photos to books. These features will no longer be available on the site on Sept. 1, 2022."

Does this mean we will no longer to be able to upload covers for books with no images? I wasn't clear what they meant by additional photos. If we can no longer add book covers, that renders the site almost useless in my opinion.
I certainly hope they don't get rid of Listopia or groups! If they do, I'm out of here. 99.99% of my time is spent on lists and on this group.
