SOLVED. 90s Children's Picture book about dark rooms, flashlights, and finding an elephant? [s]

Helping a friend: "I vaguely remember everything is dark, he's looking at something and trying to guess what it is based on only that part (ie sees the tail, guesses something, the leg, guesses something else). And in the end, with all the information, it turns out to be an elephant."

Another friend said they remembered the same book, that it was dark with bright characters. Any ideas?
