SOLVED. Middle Grade/ YA Realistic fiction. Boy and family dog lose weight together training for dog show. [s]

An overweight boy decides to train his older, overweight dog (possibly a Basset hound) so that he can enter him in a dog show (possibly motivated by the reward money). His family is super skeptical, but the boy is dedicated to consistently taking the dog for walks and in the process both lose weight.
I remember a scene where the boy's mom pulls up next to him in her car while he's out walking the dog far from his house, and she offers him a ride back home because he's out of breath (and it might be starting to rain, not sure), but he refuses and gets back by himself.

Probably read in sometime between 2010-2014.. and it was likely not published that many years prior.

No, I think the cover looked a little more modern and the story wasn't crush/romance heavy. The dog plot-line was the main one, not a subplot as far as I remember.
