SOLVED. Juvenile Adventure book about a searching party travelling the world looking for a lost character, using clues from a letter with missing information. Possible Spoilers. [s]

Read in the 80s, after watching the TV series adaptation (I lived in Eastern Europe at the time, so its possible the series was Eastern block made). I feel kind of dumb for not remembering, because I think it's a quite popular 'classic' book ( in a league with Robinson Crusoe, The three Musketeers etc).

Possible spoilers:

It's set in 18 or 1900s .Character disappears after travelling to somewhere in the new world. After a message ( maybe in a bottle) or possible letter is received a searching party is formed to try to find him. Since parts of the letter is destroyed they are trying to use the information they have.
oh now I'm thinking that they knew the latitude, so they decided they would travel around the world through it?
