While the manuscript seems more believable to most out of the two, I believe there are holes presented in both team manuscript and team letter.
Taking the letters out of the equation, we are judging Verity based off of words on a paper. Words that happen to sound villainous, which funny enough, she IS known for writing phenomenal novels from the villain's perspective. We unfortunately don't get to hear Verity speak and the perspective of this book is Lowen's, who seems just as carried away with Jeremy as Verity appeared in the manuscript.
I believe all three (Lowen, Verity and Jeremy) are villains in their own ways but i'd like to focus on Jeremy and Lowen. Was Jeremy really as charming as Lowen and many readers thought or was he secretly manipulative? And was Lowen really as innocent or did she grow into the version of Verity we read in the manuscript? Remember that this book is from Lowen's perspective so she could have painted him in a better light.
My reasoning that Jeremy is suspicious:
- first scene when he, of all people, coincidentally is the one to help Lowen. In that scene, he is also touchy with Lowen, and doesn’t even mention that she is the one he is planning on meeting. Let's face it, he KNEW who Lowen was. He read HER book and wanted her to take Verity's position as the author (and possibly in more ways than just that).
- he doesn't give up when Lowen declines the offer. they mentioned they had two other authors they could reach out to but he basically pressures her into the position.
- if he read the manuscript, he could have hid it in a place wehre Lowen could find it so that Lowen could have empathy towards him. who knows... he could've messed with the manuscript and made his own edits to it?
- whether Verity was in the right/wrong, Jeremy CHEATED on his wife WHILE she was in his house (possibly to make her jealous?)
Why I believe Lowen is villainous: Lowen seems to have parallels to the manuscript version of Verity. - She desires Jeremy in a sexual way - she places bite marks in the same spot on the headboard - she helps commit a murderous act. - and she is malicious towards Verity when Jeremy isn't around.
I do believe Verity could have murdered Harper and struggled with guilt from but we do know for a fact that Jeremy and Lowen murdered Verity. Even though that was an act of revenge or of pure hatred, THEY ARE IN THE WRONG FOR THAT!
So is Verity really guilty and manipulative or does she have a DISTURBING way of coping with loss? I wish we had the chance to hear her speak and patch up a few holes. There are definitely things she could have done better, but what if Alice knew about Verity and she was planning to help her escape somehow? Additionally, Alice was (rightfully) suspicious of Lowen too. There are so many holes and I agree with many points from both the letter and manuscript and I'd love to discuss if anyone wants to add on to/disagree with my points!
