SOLVED. Elementary/ middle grade book about an older brother, told through younger brother's journal entries. Spoiler ahead. [s]

it's a fiction book that i read in 2006 from my middle school library, unsure what the actual intended grade level was but i was twelve. it's told from a younger brother's point of view in journal entries about his older, trouble maker brother. the older brother's name started with an a, and i think his name was the title of the book. also think he was a metalhead, and may have gone off to college close to the end of the book, or maybe just run away? i wanna say it was set during the 80's or 90's, but i'm not sure. the cover was hardback, and it either looked like one of those black and white composition books or had black and white stripes, possibly with some doodles and stuff on it. it wasn't very long, about 200 pages or less, and it wasn't new when i read it. spoiler below!








i'm almost positive around the end they find out the older brother has schizophrenia.
