ABANDONED. YA(I think) Fantasy Book, Main Character gets stain on soul/magic?

I don't have a lot to work with, but its driving me mad so I have to try here!

The book is fantasy and oldish times, I'm sure of that much, I think I read it in 2007 or so, but a certain line is all that popped into my head so I'm not sure.

Specifically, the main character (I think it was a girl) was going through a cleansing ritual to remove a stain from her magic/soul/spirit. It gave the impression in my mind she had done this many times before without much luck. It was in a bath house kind of situation, with stone step points with runes on them. You started in the center, then you could pick one of four paths, and this time she picked a different path from usual, fire I think(Pretty sure had a few elemental paths, fire water wind earth). She covered herself with ashes on the first step stone, second one she sat awhile and sweated (I think) then the last one (may be more between) she pulled a rope which dumped a bucket of glacier melt water on herself. This particular time it did remove/lessen the stain as she had mentally linked the dirtiness of her body with the soul/magic stain in her mind unconsciously so some/most of it washed off with the sweating and the glacier water.

That is literally all I can remember of it. The stain is what really is bugging me, whenever I think of the stain, it niggles the back of my head like I really should remember, but I just can't! >.> I think its an older young adult book, 15-18.

Edit: I also suspect the stain was not the characters fault. Maybe a curse, or handling something he or she shouldn't have? Can't remember, just a feeling.
