Susan Lewallen (susanlewallen) | 797 comments I've enjoyed Elizabeth George's British police detective series with Inspector Thomas Lynley ("Tommy" to his friends) for several decades. I was caught up on the series and glad to see a new one out, but was slightly disappointed. Lynley is there, along with DCs Winston Nkata and the incorrigible Barbara Havers, trying to figure out who killed a Nigerian born policewoman who’s been investigating FGM within the Nigerian community in London. George puts mountains of research into her books and I thought she dealt with the difficult subject well. She didn’t move the personal life of Lynley along as much as I’d have liked though, and Barbara Havers seemed stalled out. There are several subplots which served to keep me guessing, but I didn’t buy the final solution to the murder. I read this as an antidote to Franzen’s Crossroads, another roughly 200,000 word novel, which moved at a glacial pace; the George book grabbed my interest and held it until the very end. It wasn’t my favorite of hers by a long way, but she’s a great mystery writer and this was just what I needed over the past few days.

Peacejanz | 1015 comments Thanks for this review. I just never caught on to George's work but I enjoyed reading your review. I have tried her 3 or 4 times and this review does not show me anything new to entice me but I am always interested in your superior reviews, Susan. Thanks. peace, janz

Thanks for your kind words! I started reading her decades ago and I'll admit I don't enjoy her as much now. I enjoy detective stories for escape sometimes.
