SOLVED. Children's chapter book series about a Kid Inventor.

I remember reading this in elementary school, maybe 3rd or 4th grade.
The protagonist is a kid inventor/child genius and comes from a long line of inventors. The villain of the book comes from a long line of people who try and steal the ideas of the protagonist's family. He's also a teacher at the kid's school.
This book is actually part of a series, but that's not obvious from the title. The only reason I knew that is because the villain is actually suffering from the effects of something that happened in the previous book: He got... disintegrated or something, and in this book he's mostly pulled himself back together, but he doesn't have a shadow and IIRC he doesn't weigh very much. The "no shadow" thing gets pointed out when his pet parrot (who is unusually intelligent and kinda his sidekick) perches on his shoulder, and someone notices that they can see the parrot's shadow but not his. (But then shouldn't they have also been able to see that shadow of his clothes? Or is he still wearing the outfit he was wearing when he got disintegrated?)
I also remember that the book opened with a diagram of either the hero's or the villain's family tree. Or maybe both, side-by-side so you can see who stole what invention?
