It's time for our next Read-a-Thon, and we are celebrating summer with a trip to the amusement park.

It's time to create your park. You will read books build attractions! Each attraction takes a different number of books, depending on complexity.

You can build your attractions in any order that you'd like, and you can work on multiple attractions at once. Don't forget about your hot dog stands! You get some for every 1000 pages read (or 10 hours of audio listed to).

You'll want to create the best amusement park that you can make, so make sure you have at least one of every type of attraction... they are all important! You can have multiples of the same types of attractions as well.

- A short book (<250 pages)
- A book related to music

FERRIS WHEEL

- A romance

- A book with a pink or purple cover
- A beach read
- A book with an illustrated cover
- A book with a 2 in the page number

ROLLERCOASTER

- A book over 500 pages
- A "fast-paced" book
- A mystery or thriller
- A book with a red cover
- A YA book
- A book with multiple lines on the cover

Samantha | 1584 comments For A book with multiple lines on the cover is this lines of text or just lines like: The Golden Cage (Faye's Revenge, #1) by Camilla Läckberg or I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
thanks!

message 4: by NancyJ (last edited May 20, 2022 12:56PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3597 comments Also for lines on cover, how do these look?

Pigs in Heaven - You might need to click on the book to see all the lines. This one looks most like a rollercoaster.
Pigs in Heaven by Barbara Kingsolver

A History of Loneliness by John Boyne

message 5: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments So sorry, i can’t remember the usual policy on comics/graphic novels for these readathons! Do they count at all, or only over a minimum number of pages, or something else?

message 6: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3326 comments In the past, graphic novels had to be 200 pages or over. Hopefully it's still the same.

What about books of poetry? I have one with 112 pages.

message 7: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Question. May I please have clarification on the prompt a book with a 2 in the page number. Don't all books have a 2 in the page number somewhere? I want to make sure I understand the prompt. Thank You.

message 8: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments Sherri that typically means page count, e.g. 302.

message 9: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I'm reading a book of short stories, two have won a Nebula and one of those was also nominated for a Hugo. Would this count for a book nominated for Hugo or Nebula award, or does it have to be the whole book?

message 10: by JessicaMHR (new)

JessicaMHR | 312 comments I know there's the rule book have to be over 100 pages but, you have a children's book listed. Does that mean it should be a children's chapter book with at least 100 pages?

message 11: by JessicaMHR (new)

JessicaMHR | 312 comments Also, Yeah Dollywood!!! I LOVE Dolly Parton!

To count for the team or individual challenges, comics/graphic novels/picture books need to be at least 200 pages. All other books need to be at least 100 pages. You can always count the pages towards the 'hot dog stands' even if they are too short to use for a challenge prompt.

Yes, it would need to be a chapter book or middle grade book with at least 100 pages.

Sherri wrote: "Question. May I please have clarification on the prompt a book with a 2 in the page number. Don't all books have a 2 in the page number somewhere? I want to make sure I understand the prompt. Thank..."

The page number meaning the total number of pages in the book. So a book with 201 pages would work but a book with 315 pages wouldn't.

Curious about this too.

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) | 1046 comments How should we determine when a book is a "beach read" or "fast-paced"?

Should we just use our own judgement? Or should we determine that with you?

message 19: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) | 1046 comments The "illustrated cover" prompt can be quite specific. In a past readathon (not sure if it was in this group or another), it had to be a drawing. I selected The Egypt Game by Zilpha Keatley Snyder and it does have a drawing as the illustrated cover. Is this prompt that specific for this readathon?

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11196 comments Mod
There are quite a few prompts (lines on cover, illustrated cover, beach read, fast-paced, etc.) that are at your discretion. If you and your group thinks it fits, it fits! We want to be flexible and fun, rather than overly limiting on this, so feel free to approve as a group (or let your group captains decide).

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3597 comments So I presume that the books in messages 3 and 4 are fine, as long as we think they fit. I think they all fit.

Yes, that’s right.

message 28: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (jonquilles) | 192 comments I don't know if this is too much work for the mods but is there some sort of post read-a-thon roundup to see how all the teams did?

message 29: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11196 comments Mod
Sure, I can make that happen, Sophia! I'll probably post it on Tuesday, to give everyone a chance to wrap up their reading and posting.

message 30: by NancyJ (last edited May 29, 2022 12:04PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3597 comments 1. As long as we have at least one of each attraction, does it matter at the end if we have some unfinished attractions? We're juggling them around to complete categories, but the books people finish tonight might be orphans.

2. I have some audible books for which I cannot find an equivalent page number. Is there a minimum number of hours for an audiobook in these cases?

message 31: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11196 comments Mod
No penalty for some incomplete attractions! It's nearly impossible to plan for them all to be complete.

Audiobook needs to be at least 1.5 hours long!

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments Dolly Parton is amazing, so maybe it's not a surprise that Team Dollywood read the most books.

I'm proud of my team, too, and the 57 books we read.

Congratulations to all of the teams!
