Kristie | 5929 comments One of our winning group reads for June 2022 is The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. Please discuss here and remember to use spoiler tags as needed, as everyone may start at different times and reads at different speeds.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.

But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.

Ed (edwarddtaylor) Yessss! I've been wanting to read this for so long. It's been sat on my shelf for about a year so I'll be joining in with you all!

Rebecca (becandthebooks) | 56 comments I bought this book in preparation since it had the winning vote! Excited to see what all the hype is about…. If it’s not for me I’m still excited to put it in my street library so someone in the neighbourhood can enjoy it! Not sure if I’ll get to both books this month, we’ll see!

Albert | 9 comments Picked this one up when it first came out and have to say, probably one of my favorite stories by Schwab. Highly recommend!

Rebecca (becandthebooks) | 56 comments 10% in and I’m loving the story…. But the amount of description, I almost feel like the book could be halved already! So many lovely quotes, but so often?! Hopefully it won’t continue to feel this way.

Carol (fleter) | 307 comments Just getting started…so unique!

Angie Boutch This is the most unique book I have read in quite some time!

message 15: by Cate (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cate | 3 comments Spoiler!!! I read this over the Memorial Day weekend and have been waiting to post.

Really clever premise and plot development. That old devil, he gives you exactly what you wish for to the letter, but not the spirit. Then he delights in your pain.
I really admired Addie’s ability to live the same troubles over and over - imagine not being able to buy clothes or rent an apartment. Or have friends. It would make for a lonely life and a lesser heroine would have given in a long time ago. But Addie keeps searching until she finds Henry and lives a lifetime of delight in his short existence. She also puts meaning in her life by inspiring artists - I thought the thread about the woman who recurs over and over in art could have been more fleshed out.
Ultimately I think she will triumph over Luc, who is after all so lonely that he pursues the only person who is a good match and understands him. You can see that he will seduce her with luxury when he couldn’t break her with want.

Shá (naturesexplorers) | 3 comments @Cate - it almost felt like the woman in the photographs was a last minute, unnecessary, addition to connect the dots.

Kristie | 5929 comments Just a friendly reminder not to forget to use spoiler tags. If you want to hide your comment, you can use this code:

<.spoiler> The text you want to hide goes here. <./spoiler>

Just remove the periods that are within the brackets (and don't leave any space there). I added those so you could see the code.

Otherwise, please clearly mark your post as a spoiler and leave some space before the spoiler, like Cate did. (Thank you, Cate!)

Please remember this is for all comments, even if you are responding to someone else's spoiler.

Thank you all!

Rebecca (becandthebooks) | 56 comments Finished. I don’t really know how I feel or what I think to be honest…… it was good 🤷🏻‍♀️ I still stand by my comment from last week, feel like it could have been half the size!

Chris | 6 comments I just started The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. Not sure what to think about it right now. Concept is really interesting, but something about it is not drawing me in. But I will read on!

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments This was my favourite book I read last year. The imagery, the storyline, the language. And that ending! A five star read for me, I hope you all enjoy it.

Elise | 5 comments This was beautifully written! I loved the descriptions and the way you were walked through her life.

Sarah Skavnak | 199 comments A bit of a slow start to this book. Now granted I am only 60 pages in. The writing is definitely descriptive as well as beautiful and a unique story line. I am encouraged by all the positive reviews to keep reading and hope to be sucked in the book!

Rebecca (becandthebooks) | 56 comments Ok, after a couple of days reflection on why I felt meh about it, I believe the majority of it comes down to the ending!

SPOILERS!!!!
Now when I mean ending I don’t mean the part that Addie finally will (eventually) win the battle with Luc, I mean Henry! I just felt sorry for him. And not because of his own infliction, but because of what Addie burdens him with. She saves his life, yes, but she also asks Luc that he remembers….. this is the part I have problems with. She wants him to remember her and miss her and dwell on what could have been all so that SHE can be remembered once. Honestly, he would have been better off finishing his deal than being burdened with her selfish needs for the rest of his life! I felt it was totally unfair, he gave her what she wanted…… and then she cursed him in a way. I think I’m just angry at her.

Carol (fleter) | 307 comments Just finished.

SPOILER!!!!!

Rebecca - wow - great point about the ending, and asking Henry to be able to remember her which caused him pain. Had not thought about your point. At the same time, it was a gift as he finally found his purpose and calling with writing. His success.

While Addie loved Henry I do think that she also loved seeing new inventions, the world evolve, and she always had Luc to protect her. I think that was also a large part of her decision.

I think the book ran a little long.

One of the most unique stories I have ever read.

4 star read for me.

message 26: by Pam (new) - rated it 4 stars

Pam I chose this as a read for my book club a few months ago and it led to a very interesting discussion. Of course , whenever it’s my turn to choose the book the other members hold their collective breaths, because they’re never sure what they’re going to get and usually it’s not their favorite genre (historical fiction). The idea of not being able to be remembered - and therefore not loved - was very thought-provoking.

Ingrid Antezana | 6 comments Really love all the story, not happy with the end, but that’s life
