War returned f*cked up soldier with no relatives and an innocent maid working in his castle

I'm looking for a book my friend read a long time ago, actually she didn't finish it but only read a few chapters of it.

Plot Details
"It was about some soldier ( H) and an innocent maid (h) who was working in his house. The soldier was away from home for war serving his country, that he didn't return home for years and the maid was hired not long before he returned back. He was mesmerized by her and instantly fell for his innocence and beauty...but I think afterward he r*pes her or something as the constant war for years f*cked up his brain ( yes, it's a dark romance)
And I think he pretends to not know who violets her and to save her dignity he " proposes" to marry her...I also think the story too occurs in a mediaeval period?"

My friend also provided some information of this book-
"The H was living in a castle ( yes, he was rich) , his parents were dead long and he has one trusted loyal butler , and as I've mentioned about that " dignity" part here, In ancient/medieval times people are obsessed with women's virginity ( ok, they still are..lol) anyways but having sex before marriage was particularly sin for them that time..this facts kinda giving me the medieval/regency/historical vibes here."

Someone also read this particular book and doesn't remember the name but described-
"It is with a man who was in the army and when he returned he had no family, he had gone mad in the army and only the new maid brought him peace. he lived in a palace and only his parents' butler survived. It's been a long time since I've read it. I'm sorry I can't remember the title of the book. The book was so dark..I didn't like it.."

To this person's reply my friend said-
"Yes, exactly!! Now you described it, I remember more details of it. Like he had no family only has one loyal trustworthy butler of his and he lives in a castle. And definitely he went mad from the long battle he fought...and the young maid was his solace."

This is what my friend/the other person remember so far about the story.
Does anyone read it or know any similar description story.. please let me know the name.

Ok so I haven't read the book but that description reminds me a lot of the TV show Poldark which was based on a book series.

Thank you for letting me know about this book series. I'll let my friend know if this is the book she's been searching for, although I strongly believe this isn't the book, having to discuss about the proper storyline. But at least we're going somewhere with your suggested book :)

A Deal With the Devil sounds kind of similar. But I don't think he was a soldier or has PTSD

Does your friend remember about what year she read the book? What war was he in? Also is it a book that your friend is looking for from a facebook group?
