I have read and really enjoyed other books by this author, but this one was not up to the same standard. Elsie and Ben got married just a few months after meeting each other and starting to date. Ben had not told his mother about Elsie, and when he dies in a road accident just 9 days after their marriage, his mother does not believe Elise was his wife. The rest of the book follows Elsie and her mother-in-law a they grieve together and come to rely on each other. After the first quarter not much actually happened, and there was very little plot. Despite the subject of the book, I didn’t feel emotionally connected to either the characters or the story, and there wasn’t much depth to either.

I rated this worse than you did. It was her debut novel I think so not surprising that she was still finding her feet. But I really disliked the histrionics of the main character. It should have been an interesting study of different ways of grieving but just ended up being self indulgent. Like you I was disappointed because I adored Daisy Jones and was keen to read more. I’m hoping her other later books are better!
