Lisa | 620 comments To anyone reading The Fisherman - have you started yet? Are you liking it?

message 103: by Justin (new)

Justin Fraxi (barondeghost) | 54 comments I finished The Fisherman last week and I loved it.

message 105: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 572 comments Agree with Justin - I read it for this challenge and I loved the book. Excellent good stuff. And it definitely fits the theme of aquatic terror.

message 106: by Badseedgirl (new)

Badseedgirl | 1033 comments I read The Fisherman last year and it was great! This is how I started my review:
"I read this book because it was the 2016 winner of the Bram Stoker Award. I enjoyed this book because John Langan is a damn fine writer."

message 107: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 620 comments Great to hear, thanks!

message 108: by Badseedgirl (new)

Badseedgirl | 1033 comments I just finished my challenge amount (10) but I am enjoying the books I have read so much, I think I'm going to try for 20 instead.

Before I break my arm too much over this accomplishment two of the books I read were short stories and one was a novella.

Two Envelopes And A Phone If no one minds...I am about to start this City Under the Sea by Kenneth Bulmer , since it just showed up, and would like to count it as part of the Summer Reading Project (I figure some SF might be allowed, as I think Wyndham's The Kraken Wakes has already been deemed acceptable).

This would be my second read for the Project; The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw was fabulous, almost perfect!

Reading Cruel Summer by Wesley Southard and it sure does create some emotion will one character's meaness. About 20% and liking it. Good aquatic horror!

message 114: by Anja (new)

Anja Henriksen | 147 comments I'm reading The Narrows by Ronald Malfi right now, expecting it to fit the water, as there's a flooding as essential part of the plot

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 426 comments So far, I've read Salvage: A Ghost Story 4 stars & My Heart Is a Chainsaw 5 stars! I have a few more water related horror novels in the queue for this summer.

Wasn't planning on doing this, but am up to 5 books that qualify.

1. Black Tide
2. The Lake of the Dead
3. Influencer Island
4. The House Across the Lake
5. Tales from the Lake Vol. 2

message 119: by Ian (RebelGeek) (new)

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 426 comments My 3rd water horror read The House Across the Lake was really good 5 stars!

message 120: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 620 comments The Fisherman is so good. Pretty scary too. Reading before bed last night in a rustic cabin was maybe not the best idea …

Two Envelopes And A Phone Next up for me is The Atlantic Abomination by John Brunner . Supposed to be kind of a Horror/SF hybrid.

message 122: by Badseedgirl (last edited Jun 29, 2022 10:18AM) (new)

Badseedgirl | 1033 comments I'm staring Blood Lake Monster by Renee Miller . At 111 pages, this is a shorty.

message 123: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 572 comments I finished the The Boats of the 'Glen Carrig' for this challenge. It's available for free in multiple places - I read it as a free download from the Gutenberg Project.

It was awesome!

message 124: by inciminci (new)

inciminci | 650 comments I finished The Devil and the Deep which in my opinion was a decent anthology - although I think I have read better Datlow anthologies. Currently reading Zombie Sharks with Metal Teeth and will follow with Flowers for the Sea . I'm really enjoying this challenge, such a good idea!

I'm glad you're enjoying this. I'm having a good time seeing all the different books everyone is reading. :)

message 126: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 620 comments To Justin and badseedgirl, and anyone else who read The Fisherman, I finished and really liked it. I particularly liked the “story within the story” portion, (view spoiler) I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and the author’s writing. Great characters and a well-painted, immersive story.

Two Envelopes And A Phone Next will be Pressure by Brian Keene

Down to the last few weeks of the challenge.
I enjoyed the books I chose... just one more to go to finish.

How are you doing with this challenge?
Read anything you'd recommend to HA members?

message 129: by Two Envelopes And A Phone (last edited Aug 04, 2022 10:51AM) (new)

Two Envelopes And A Phone I've got two books to get to, to complete my goal of 9 Aquatic Horror reads. Most recommended so far: The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw . I'm actually about to start The Deep by Alma Katsu , and I'll finish off with The Kraken Wakes by John Wyndham

message 130: by inciminci (new)

inciminci | 650 comments I'm reading the last book for this challenge and I'm actually really liking it: Flowers for the Sea by Zin E. Rocklyn

Another one I really liked, although not exactly horror, is:
The Pisces by Melissa Broder

Thank you so much WendyB for this challenge, I had a lot of fun. I never participated in these "seasonal" challenges before but I might have changed my mind 😃

You're very welcome. :)
It's fun thinking up reading challenges throughout the year. Kinda forces us all to try different books and authors. I've discovered many good reads this way.

message 132: by Fatman (new)

Fatman | 17 comments Already covered The Narrows and Borealis this summer, any recommendations?

I sort of have a question. :)

If it goes past August 31st will this thread still be open?

I am just slammed with stuff at the moment and I have two books left to go - I am going to try and make it but I don't know if I will or not.

Marie, this thread will stay open but the challenge be over on August 31. It shuts down after that and won't add books read.
Read fast!! ...or read short books? :)

message 135: by Ian (RebelGeek) (new)

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 426 comments Oh damn. I might not get more than 1 more in. I have Those Across the River audiobook borrowed from Libby, but I guess it's not about the water, just around it maybe. ha ha

I'm still reading it, so I can't give my full opinion on it. But so far I'm enjoying it.

message 144: by Badseedgirl (new)

Badseedgirl | 1033 comments I really enjoyed The Fisherman. For me, Kill River will probably be my last book for this challenge. There are still a few books on my possibility list for the challenge that I want to read as the summer ends.

message 145: by Badseedgirl (new)

Badseedgirl | 1033 comments Turns out On Stranger Tides will be my last book in the series. I received it from Overdrive and since it fits the theme so well, I decided to read it.

message 147: by Ian (RebelGeek) (new)

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 426 comments Those Across the River was definitely not aquatic.
I plan to listen to The Deep next. I borrowed the audiobook from Libby.

message 148: by Anja (new)

Anja Henriksen | 147 comments I failed the challenge :/
A combination of not being in the mood for reading those water stories and also it was hard to be sure when starting s story, if it really had water as an important part. many stories is named like water is important, but then it turns out it's only metaphorically lol, so honestly this was a lot harder to find the right books for my taste living up to the theme as I had expected

message 149: by WendyB (new)

WendyB | 5012 comments Mod
Can't fail a challenge. :)
Part of the idea is to expand your reading horizons and check out books that may not have caught your attention otherwise.

message 150: by Anja (new)

Anja Henriksen | 147 comments okay, but I failed with bravour my goal of 10 books lol
