This historical novel is based around the attempts to lay the first transatlantic cable. Some historical figures are included but as far as I can tell all the main characters are fictional. There is an engineer, his wife who gets involved with spiritualism, a newspaper artist, and a couple of others who have chapters from their point of view.
The book was rather slow starting with quite a bit to keep track of. The middle part was pretty engaging, when a ship is dealing with a huge storm at sea and almost as stormy relationships between people. The last third seemed more like an epilogue and kind of dragged for me. I think the whole book could have been shorter and less repetitive.
