The majority of the book (at least 75%) takes place in the Ukraine. The family in the book was forced to make a decision between two evils, to flee the Ukraine under the protection of the Germans or stay under the rule of Stalin. Their journey out of the Ukraine is a long one where they land in Poland for a short time and East Germany. The way the book is set up, even when they are in these places, they are flashing back to their life in the Ukraine. Much of their story is told in these flashbacks. The last 5% of the book lands them in the US with trips back to the Ukraine.
