Rhys has a woman as his personal secretary and later hires on Dr. Garrett Gibson, a female doctor. What does it say about him that he would trust women in key areas of his life in an era when this just wasn’t done?

I think is signifies that he has a good eye for talent and competence and didn't let gender stand in the way of acquiring the best person. Since he faces a lot of discrimination as a Welshman, he knows prejudice firsthand.

This was one of his best characteristics. I wish we could see more of Dr. Gibson in future books!

Rhys is a man before his time. He has good instincts about skills and abilities and then selects the best person for the position. It is an excellent quality in a leader. As a result, his staff is loyal to him. It is hard not to be as he gives them a living wage and opportunities.

I agree with Phrynee. It is one of his best qualities.

I'm sure Dr. Gibson will return. She was too important in this book to disappear.

When you’ve worked as hard and achieved as much as Rhys and still can’t be respected at the same level as others who’ve done much less but were only high borne, it makes you think of equality more expansively. The thing I admire about him is that he does see the lesson and applies it. Rhys has a great eye for seeing right through people and plucking out the talented ones. Gender seems to mean nothing to him. And, he understands the value of loyalty…his livelihood depends on it.

I agree with everyone also. I think Rhys looked at someone's qualifications, not their gender. A man way ahead of his time!
