I read this book somewhere between 2005-2006. It was a book about a future world where society as we know it had been buried under pollution and junk mail. The plot centered on archeologists(?) in this future time who were trying to interpret relics from our time to see what they could figure out about our society. They saw things like a tall McDonald's sign and thought it was a message/offering to the gods. I believe there was a scene in an old motel as well.
