It was good- so easy and entertaining... I loved hearing about life in the time it was set. I hadn't realised quite how old it was when I started. Am very glad I was promoted to read it!
I read the book and then watched the most recently made movie (200?) The only thing they both had in common was the title and a few character names. Ppbbfftt. I started watching the 1970 version and that one is at least based on the book. This was my first Dumas book. I was super excited to mow through this historical novel. I wasn’t disappointed. It had so much adventure intertwined with love hope revenge justice and mercy. And so many really well developed characters that I feel like some of them could have had their own stories.
4 out of 5 stars from me.
Overall, I liked the story. However, you do have set aside your disbelief (no one recognizes this guy?), and enjoy the ride.
I finished The Count of Monte Cristo a few days ago. I really enjoyed the story which is very detailed and LONG, but worth it. Most of the books moves along reasonably well but I think that there are places where it could have benefited from some trimming. I agree with Debbie that the characters are well-developed.
I look forward to tackling Dumas' The Three Musketeers some day- I believe I read an abridged version of that as a teenager, back in the pre-computer and mobile phone days.
