Aaron Nagy | 510 comments Finished An Unwelcome Quest this book was great I think I enjoyed it as much as the first one perhaps a bit more the banter was great. The Audiobook was great for this one and I highly recommend that version.

Finished Hellfire, no training segment at the start like the last 2 and a great masterstroke at the end by the main character made this really enjoyable despite it still being MARY SUE ALERT.

Read bothSecrets of a D-List Supervillain, Origins of a D-List Supervillain

Origins was a straightforward prequel, Secrets seemed to be mostly an effort in changing a 1 shot book into a series I think it succeeded unfortunately much of the book is a bit extra padding for just the redirection needed hopefully the next book is really good.

I read a bunch of light novels not really worth mentioned 2 were super generic...and finally got around to reading Maoyu volume 1...which strikes me as Safehold-the YA version it's also a bit immature which isn't too surprising since it was originally not intended to be published and his first work.

Then Pact ended as well...after it started in January 2014, I think he said it came out to be around 1.5million words. It was quite good not as good as his last work but it certainly was an interesting supernatural story and was fun waiting to see what horrible thing would happen to Blake and Rose next chapter. Having 2? main characters inheriting a canonically huge amount of negative karma so the universe is constantly conspiring against them certainly made for fun.

Kim | 1499 comments I'm currently half way through Heir to the Jedi which has replaced Splinter of the Mind's Eye in the Star Wars canon. It's set between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back and is the first of the new canon set after the original movie.

I liked all four of the books although the first one is the best. Enjoy!

My 2 cents! I've read 3 of the series, the first one is probably my favorite in the overall sense, but the 3rd, Brisingr...the air concussing from an enormous dragon's wings as he's becoming air born. It would shatter the air, wouldn't it... Paolini brought that home; he loves his dragons, you can tell. Stuff like that can really make a book for me. Book 4 I was just thinking I should read it. I think he was only 15 when he wrote the first one and by book 4 his style changed, but I'll be reading it.

Tessa in Mid-Michigan (asata) QUANDARY! I just got both Shadow Scale and Shadow Study in from the library. Which should I read first? I can't decide. I loved the earlier books (Seraphina and Poison Study, respectively). Oh, the agony. Heh. Shadow Study's shorter--that's the one. Thanks for listening!

message 156: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (inametaphor) Just finished The Outstretched Shadow by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory. It's about what I would expect from a Lackey book, which means that it was quick, fluffy, and entertaining. It hits most of her favorite tropes, so if you haven't liked her in the past, the addition of Mallory won't change that for you. It's actually a little hard to discern what influence Mallory actually had on the book.

I'm a few stories into Dangerous Women, but it's slow going. It's my first Martin/Dozois anthology, and I was taken by surprise by the number of genres represented. I don't know why, but I expected it to be a little more heavily tilted toward SFF. If nothing else, however, it's introduced me to Joe Abercrombie, who has immediately entered my wishlist.

I'm also partway through Rise of the Spider Goddess: An Annotated Novel, which is just a hoot. If you want to know how much first novels suck, this is a great book to read.

message 157: by Phrynne (new)

Phrynne I finished Towers of Midnight and find that Brandon Sanderson has given this series a whole new outlook! I am going to go straight into A Memory of Light

Beachesnbooks I just finished Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, which was extremely cute, and am still working on Station Eleven and Americanah. Also about to start Red Queen.

message 159: by Don (new)

Don Dunham just finished "the devil you know" by Mike Carey. when I was underwhelmed by the first "Dresden files" novel (I'm told later ones got better) and " the iron druid" (which, had some moments)... "The devil you know" is the book I was looking for! Urban fantasy well done and witty.

message 160: by Don (new)

Don Dunham Colleen, if all "dangerous women" did was to put Abercrombie on your radar it will have been worth it. give San Dan Glockta and Shy South my regards.

Oh man, Don! That is one of my all time favorite series. Supposedly he's working on two others but I've reread those first five several times. I love Felix.

message 162: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I finished Touch today and I think everyone should read it. I thought it was completely brilliant. I think that having seen Fallen (Denzel Washington) so many times, I was maybe able to visualize it even more.

I also read Flowers for Algernon

message 170: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments I finished listening to Something Wicked This Way Comes, which just wasn't for me apparnetly. (My Review)

My discworld read continues on with Equal Rites, which I enjoyed almost as much as The Light Fantastic, albeit for mostly different reasons. (My Review)

message 171: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3915 comments I was so disappointed in Something Wicked this Way Comes. I've loved the movie since I was a kid but the book was a letdown.

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments I haven't seen the movie. Maybe I'll look into it.

That's my feeling as well. It was one of my earliest 'favorites' and I'm not sure now if the attraction is really liking it now or remembering how well I liked it years ago.

M.L. | 947 comments The Dangerous Alphabet by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Gris Grimly.
The text is fun... "E's for the Evil that lures and entices;"..."U are the reader who shivers with dread;"....But Grimly's illustrations are what make the book.

The Dangerous Alphabet by Neil Gaiman

The real find though was Gris Grimly's Frankenstein. It's brilliant and definitely macabre.

Kim | 1499 comments Not much reading been happening for the last couple days for me but I've been reading The Skull Throne by Peter V. Brett, the 4th book in his Demon Cycle.

message 179: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 263 comments I've had a succession of DNFs from my free download list, which is where the majority of my Kindle reads come from except for my 'tried and true' authors I've followed for years.

It does get tiring after about 15 or so and I've gone back to my old favorites for a breath of fresh air ... re-reading Lois Bujold's Chalion series.

I can't get waited to start once it hits the streets for us plebs tomorrow.

I finished Hardship and working though Damnation. Which is pretty clearly and plainly stated to be a single book split in two, the main character keeps getting more and more abilities it's like reading some terrible fanfiction but well written. Ohh well it's almost over and I'm still enjoying it.

Going back to reading Devil's Cape and The Dwarves once I'm done with Damnation and The Skull Throne

Yes, I'm waiting until 9:01pm PST so I can download it...one of the advantages of a Westcoast timezone - the new ebooks are released on east coast time zones in North America :)

message 183: by Rob (new)

Rob Boffard (robboffard) | 29 comments Just knocked a couple out the park:

- The Lazarus War: Artefact, by Jamie Sawyer. I'm not normally a big military SF fan, but this book had some killer ideas in it. Jamie and I have the same publisher, so I'm a little biased, but I really did enjoy reading this.

- The Magicians Trilogy, by Lev Grossman. Just. So. Damn. Good.

Funny,

I see it exactly the opposite. I loved the book and thought the movie was meh. It is one of my favorite Bradbury's

message 185: by YouKneeK (new)

YouKneeK | 1412 comments I finished the science fiction book Fallen Angels by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, and Michael Flynn. It was ok, but not a favorite. My review.

After that I moved on to Four and Twenty Blackbirds by Cherie Priest, which is more of a paranormal type book. I haven’t read much paranormal stuff since my teens, and I really enjoyed this one. I liked it enough that I’m now reading the second book in the trilogy which I’m also enjoying. My review.

Agree...there were a few parts in these books where I was thinking, what...the? I think one of the things I liked so much was that I didn't feel like I could predict in advance where exactly things were going to go in the books...that was great. :)

message 193: by Scott (new)

Scott | 152 comments I finished Seven Deadly Wonders. Then I tried to start two different books but I just couldn't get into them. So I read the short story from King: A Face in the Crowd.

Now I'm reading The Name of the Wind.

message 194: by Michele (new)

Michele I haven't been in much a reading mood lately - I keep reading first chapters of things and then playing video games and watching tv. But there are a few books coming out this month I'm really looking forward to.

I just picked up Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Vol. 1 because Ken Liu said it was the inspiration for his new book The Grace of Kings which I have preordered and I wanted a bit of background. I don't think this is the best translation, but the one I see recommended is $25 and only hard copy, so I went with an ebook that will give me a taste.

Also I preordered The Rebirths of Tao, because I really liked the first two in the series.

And I also preordered The Disfavored Hero because it sounds awesome.

All are coming on the same day...which to read first?!?

message 195: by Trike (new)

Trike I bounced off of Red Rising and went back to the Science of Monsters, which is a book you can read piecemeal.

My head cold kept me awake last night, so I watched Trevor Noah's standup on Netflix (excellent) and an indie sci-fi flick whose name I've already forgotten because it was a low-budget Jacob's Ladder.

I read the first chapter of Samit Basu's Turbulence and it was excellently written with great hooks. I'll probably switch over to that.

message 196: by Scott (new)

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 210 comments Personally, while I want to read both Tao and Kings, I know I'll be going with Tao first. Have loved that series and must.have.more!

I was not a fan of Red Rising, but I confess I'm interested in your take. I'm thinking it's generational and not my generation at all. I'm usually close to the ratings in my assessment, but I was way off on that one. Not my cuppa...

Next up is a reread of The Golem and the Jinni.
