Phrynne I just finished Hounded the first book in the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. I thought it was very good and similar in many ways to the Dresden Files.

Maarit | 136 comments I started to read Homeland by R.A. Salvatore. I admit it's my first Forgotten Realms book I've even tried to read, even though I've read almost all of the Weiss&Hickman Dragonlance books when I was younger (and also some others by other writers).

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments Listened to The Price of Valor. Loved it! It doesn't seem like many people are reading this series for some (It starts with The Thousand Names) and that's a shame. I think it's great. (My Review)

I also listened to Armada, in 2 days. It's fun, but nowhere as good as Ready Player One, but that was expected. (My Review)

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 775 comments I just finished Touch by Claire North. Not as good as her The first fifteen lives of Harry August or David Mitchell's The Bone Clocks (both of which I read earlier this year).

Looking forward to trying Iain Banks The Player of Games pretty soon, after I finish the first two Brian Staveley books in The Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne. Banks has generally been hit or miss with me (hated The Algebraist and Excession, loved Matter and Surface Detail).

message 556: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) | 111 comments There's a listopia someone put together that purports to have all the books she mentions in Among Others...that's a great love letter to scifi if you haven't read it. :)

Don Dunham has anyone seen "Ex Machina"? I think it might be the best SciFi movie in years. not a adrenaline fueled roller-coaster ride though.

M.L. | 947 comments I finished Seveneves. I added it to my 'favorites'. At times it seemed long and technical, and it was, but it fit the story. It was awesome; memorable characters, real heroics, very topical. There has to be a sequel; hope it's not too far off! Currently reading Armada.

Don Dunham I thought Seveneves was pretty standalone. I could be wrong. Very much enjoyed the book.

K. G. Whitehurst | 64 comments I'm finishing CLASH OF KINGS and THE HERO OF AGES and just getting started with THE QUANTUM THIEF. Now, I'm going off to watch GOING POSTAL, which I read and thought was a lot of fun.

message 568: by Julie (new)

Julie Irvin | 11 comments Just finished "Aschwood Academy" by M.B. Cohen. It was a really fun adventure fantasy novel about a school for the magically gifted but with many twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. I really recommend it to anyone that enjoyed Harry Potter. It's a quick enjoyable read and in looking forward to the next book in the series.

The Quantum Thief is probably one of my favourite books of the year...although I feel like I've read so many good books this year it's hard to say.

It's probably wishful thinking on my part. But I sure hope so. There is a perfect segue there. Definitely more I want to know and since he explains so much I hope he keeps explaining because he must have thought about the next... and the in between, and the hows and whys.

1/4>3>2. The second book suffers from second book of a trilogy syndrome, the third wraps up the story completely but it is not as good as the first. You should also read Alloy of Law which is fantastic and a standalone/prequel for the next trilogy.

message 573: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) | 111 comments Lile wrote: "I can't wait to read Seveneves! Unfortunately there's 45 people ahead of me on the waitlist at the library ;(

Oh no! Can you put in a request that they purchase additional copies? I don't know how many they already have, but maybe they underestimated the demand. Or, maybe there are lots of copies and 45 people in front of you will go by fairly quick. :)

message 574: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments Personally I think it's the best Mistborn book he's written.

So I'd go 3,1,4,2 but the gap between all but 4 and 2 is pretty small of rme.

message 575: by K. G. (new)

K. G. Whitehurst | 64 comments I actually liked THE WELL OF ASCENSION. I'm not through THE HERO OF THE AGES, but I'm sure it's going to pull it all together with a bang. What I enjoyed most about WofA is the force of change; everybody in that book changed, whether they wanted to or not. That doesn't make for action packed narrative, but it does make for thoughtful narrative.

message 576: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments Oh, I like them all, just that one much less than the others.

message 577: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (torey) | 7 comments Rebecca Mcelhaney This year I have read a lot of great books. some of my favorite have been the Nexus Trilogy: Nexus, Crux, & Apex, Neil Stephenson's Seveneves, The Margarets and in Fantasy, A Rational Arrangement

Only 7 months in and I've had some amazing reading experiences. I hope to get The Martian soon. I'm very eager.

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments Catching up on reviews a bit from the last 2 weeks...

I finished listening to Finders Keepers, and I think it's a little better than Mr. Mercedes. (My Review)

I also listened to Working for Bigfoot. Not as good as the novels, but it's always nice to get new Harry Dresden stories, and James Marsters is great as always. (My Review)

I finally finished Time Salvager, which I liked, but not nearly as much as the Tao books. I also had no idea it was the first book of a series. Why is everything always a series? (My Review)

Monica (monicae) | 512 comments Finished Ancillary Justice recently and though I enjoyed the book, I'm not yet ready to go back into that universe for the monthly read. I've recently started War of the Whales: A True Story. I think I am going to love it. Also reading The Last Colony, book 3 in the Scalzi's Old Man's War series. August should be fun!!!

I read this book about a year ago with my book club and found it very challenging. And while I thought it could have been better, same as you, I admired what the author was trying to do. It's pretty hard to tell a story without the characters having a spoken language and through the viewpoint of beings with limited understanding of their world. I was surprised that I understood as much of it as I did and could appreciate the irony of this sad story.

message 587: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments I finished listening to Seveneves. I enjoyed it, though not as much as some of his others. And it won't be for everyone. (My Review)

message 588: by M.L. (new)

M.L. | 947 comments Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo has Sept 29 pub date but the first 2 chapters are available free on Kindle. It reads very fast, very smooth. There is also a GR giveaway. I haven't read anything by Bardugo before but this sounds interesting.

message 589: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) | 111 comments I read her other trilogy which I believe is set in the same universe and liked it very much. The last one was YA; I don't know about this new one.

message 590: by M.L. (last edited Aug 08, 2015 02:21PM) (new)

M.L. | 947 comments The first 2 chapters were really really good! She hit the ground running. I think it's marketed as YA. But similar to The Hunger Games, the appeal will cross over. It's a blend of fantasy and crime and in this brief read both are equally believable.
I would have ordered the book if it was out.

I've been meaning to try that series but haven't gotten around to it. I'm currently reading Uprooted by Naomi Novik, a bit of a departure from her Temeraire books, and also The Long Mars by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter. This series seems to be slowing down as it progresses, each subsequent book is taking longer to read than the previous one.

I think Like Water for Chocolate is one of those rare books, where the movie may be better.

Tad (tottman) | 159 comments Finished Armada by Ernest Cline. I can understand the criticism it's received, but I enjoyed it. A nice fun little read. Not too deep and some parts don't bear close examination, but it was entertaining.

I found that about The Long Mars too. So much so that I have not even acquired The Long Utopia yet. But I will get it and I will read it if only because of who wrote it!

So the book description reads exactly like The Last Starfighter. Is this a ripoff, homage, or something entirely different? Just curious of your interpretation.

message 598: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments I'd call it a homage. He calls it out fairly early in the book.

message 599: by Tad (new)

Tad (tottman) | 159 comments I agree. He makes no bones of the fact that it draws on Last Starfighter and a number of other 80's science fiction. It doesn't have the depth or originality of Ready Player One but I wasn't bored.

message 600: by Justice (new)

Justice (HavenTierra) I'm reading Kill Whitey by Brian Keene but i'm about a week away from finishing so next I will either be starting Pines by Blake Crouch or was thinking I might pick up a Tom Piccirilli novel as a memorial read.
