Is everyone following Harker?"

I am now! Love it

DivaDiane SM | 3682 comments So, I dug out my dead-tree edition of Dracula, because my eyes have been bothering me read too much from my screen. I noticed that the book doesn’t quite follow the timeline and Mina and Lucy’s letters come a little later. Is this the same in all editions and our Daily Dracula is just sending thing on the day they are dated?

At any rate, we got a little Austen-esque letter writing from Mina and Lucy on May 11th.

Has everyone gotten to them yet?

Oh! And we have a Spider-Man appearance!

Nicol | 505 comments I haven’t since I’m doing the audio. Should I skip ahead on my hard copy to find those letters from Mina?

I skipped back and forth in the audiobook. It was slightly fiddly but my eyes are not happy with reading from a screen too much so I don’t want to read the text from the emails.

DivaDiane SM | 3682 comments Nicol, I suppose it depends on how closely you want to experience it in “real time”. If it’s not too hard to find them, I’d say go for it. I’m not sure why Stoker didn’t put them in at the proper date.

Too bad I don’t do Twitter"

I had no idea, but I am now! Thanks for posting that.

I think it's because of the delivery time. They would not have arrived the same day they were written. There doesn't seem to be a lot of rhyme or reason to that, and I have no idea how long it took for mail to get from any particular point to another at that time, but that's what I always thought explained the wonkiness of the dates in the timeline.

I like that the subscription is actually putting them in date order from written date.

DivaDiane SM | 3682 comments Unfortunately, the most recent tweet from that Twitter account is from 2013. It’s pretty funny to read through.

The one I linked? It's a 2022 account?

Is it though? I see 1897.

Ed Erwin | 177 comments Being able to climb around like spider man is a cool skill, and one I didn't remember Dracula had. Could be really useful for getting into some house you weren't invited to. But why is he doing it at home? And why wear a cape if you plan to be upside down?

Yeah, I was thinking Diane was joking, but 2013 didn't fit! :D

Mo Shah J. Harker logic : being more worried about how he will shave without a mirror instead of being concerned about not seeing Dracula’s reflection in the mirror!

Also good point about the wall crawling… haha hmm 🤔

I often think though about what sorts of things I'd accept if they weren't the stuff we've been saturated with.

Doesn't like sunlight, can't appear in mirrors, ok, vampire.

But what if vampires were like... need a shit ton of vitamin D so they're always eating fish and liver and followed low FODMAP diets to avoid garlic. Would I pick up on it as readily? Probably not!

DivaDiane SM | 3682 comments Ah! I followed the link, but well, suffice it to say, by the time I could actually follow the account I had misremembered the Twitter handle as “therealjharker” rather than @RealJHarker which is the correct one. The wrong one is from 2013.

DivaDiane SM | 3682 comments I think the “cape” was wings actually and Harker just trying to put them into a context he could understand completely forgetting about gravity. Yeah, he’s a bit thick, isn’t he?

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I had to check the other account :D Nice that someone had fun with Drac in 2013, too!

Me too, because if it were a cape it would have fallen over his head!

That’s what I thought- if he’s upside down then the cape would fall down over his head. Unless it’s got some wires in it or something else to hold it stiff

See, I know I'm not a good note taker, because even when the things I need to jot down are very clear and I'm in a perfectly rational state of mind, I can't get half the word count of our friend Harker.

I know I've read this book before, but somehow this whole scene with the female vamps was not in my memory at all.

The bag is what makes this scene memorable for me. Gross!

Mo Shah "Then the Count turned, after looking at my face attentively, and said in a soft whisper:—
“Yes, I too can love; you yourselves can tell it from the past. Is it not so?"

That was a powerful scene too! I can't stop thinking about it.

That's perfect!

I'm terribly behind on my comments, but absolutely want to catch up and write something for every email.

Kandice | 271 comments I'm following him now, and he's pretty hilarious.

The Jonathan Harker tweets are my official favorite part of this adventure.

message 77: by Anna (new) - added it

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Mine too! :D They're also very useful to audiobookers, because when I see a new tweet I know I need to listen to the next part.

Stephen Burridge | 514 comments I am continuing to enjoy the emails. I’ve been tempted to just get the book out and finish it, but I like the slow process of reading the snippets as they come in. It does suit the dated diary entries and letters that make up the book.

I agree, but I also am terribly missing Jonathan Harker Tweets. Can't wait until he's properly back in story.

HeyT | 506 comments Yeah I miss the tweets too even if I did come to them late.

AITA because I wouldn't promise to stake my wife through the heart and cut her head off?

Hee hee.

Bonnie | 1280 comments I fell behind the daily reads during the summer, but caught up. I add flags and labels to Google Maps sometimes to see where our characters are.

message 84: by Ed (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ed Erwin | 177 comments I wish I had signed up for the e-mails. Trying to do it on my own, I pretty much stopped when there was a big gap between days for two chapters. The e-mails re-arranged the chapters out of the published order, but I wasn't motivated enough to figure out how to do that myself.

I'm finishing the book now. It is fairly good. But it does go on and on too long in parts.
(The influence on literature was huge, but my personal enjoyment puts it only at pretty good.)
