I remember this gentle nature fiction book from an environmental camp I attended in the early 90s. The counsellor would read a chapter every night but we never finished in the two weeks or so while I was at camp.

Each chapter followed an animal in a period of its life during a season and each chapter ends with the center of the story passing to another related animal through predation or relation.

I recall most vividly a chapter about a botfly that burrowed into a mammal and then ate it's way out.
