Ruth I remember I was dubious when we left Prodigy for the open internet and that worked out fine, so perhaps I'm resistant to change and shouldn't be the person bringing this up. However, as you all know, I can't keep my mouth shut very well, so here goes.

Now that we have 641 members I'm wondering what will happen when we open nominations for our next list. I've looked at the profiles of those who've taken enough interest to introduce themselves in the Welcome conference.

Seems to me that an awful lot of them list bestseller crapola or various mass media genres. If I remember correctly one even said her favorite reading paranormal romance!

My concern is that we're going to get a lot of trash nominated, and because drek usually floats to the top, we may end up with it on our reading list, which would completely change the character of Constant Reader.

Can anyone think of a way to avoid this? I did think that maybe in our Introduction Sherry could say something about how we tend to favor literary fiction, but that wouldn't solve the problem of the 641 members we already have. (Or maybe by the time I finish this note, it'll be 642!)

Not to mention poor Sherry, trying to organize a nominations/voting process with this many members.

Am I just a worrywart?

message 2: by Barbara (new)

Barbara It occurs to me that the person who is organizing the nominations and counting the votes has ultimate power. If the book that gets a lot of votes is a romance novel or bad science fiction, it should be vetoed. That's the nice thing about having Sherry and Ricki counting the votes.

message 3: by Sherry (new)

Sherry That's why I've always resisted those software options with a "polling" feature. I like keeping the votes private. I'm going to open it up and just let's see what happens. In my introduction to the nomination process I will emphasize that we want literary fiction titles. If we get any paranormal romances, I'll put it on the nomination list, but I doubt it would garner much enthusiasm. If somehow it DOES get a lot of votes, I will try to think of a polite way to ask them to start their own group. I may be asking for it, BUT let's see.

message 4: by Lynn (new)

Lynn You're not alone in thinking those thoughts, Ruth. They've occurred to me too. I agree that keeping this as a private voting process helps us maintain control. Since a lot of the people who have introduced themselves haven't seemed to get involved otherwise, we might not have as much problem as I've anticipated.

Lynn

message 5: by Ruth (new)

Ruth I hope you're right, Lynn. I'm just worrying that if we do get a paranormal romance nominated that'll bring all the paranormal romances lovers out of the woodwork.

Sherry, I think your idea of saying right off the gitgo that our reading list nominations are traditionally literary fiction is a good idea.

R

message 6: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I think it's going to be fine. Lynn's right in that none of the romance lovers have had much to say here, and there are groups on GR where they would feel more at home. Of course, maybe they think that sort of thing is literary fiction. I seriously doubt, though, that we will have enough people who would vote for that genre that they could stage a coup.

Cindy The "imprint" has to realize they are just that, the imprint. Its all part of how that magic or whatever you want to call it works. Besides, it allows Bella to have a clear choice between two great loves. She would not have known she loved Jacob that much had he not kissed her. Just my thoughts.

Stacy I thought that Edward's comment that Jacob would have no choice in leaving Bella if he were to imprint on someone else was very insightful. Her choices made more sense to me after thinking about this.

Holly When did Jacob ever try to imprint on Bella? I mean in all three books it never said anything about him trying to.

Cindy Read on page 176. Since Bella has not figured it out on her own Jacob had to resort to more drastic measures, specifically the whole reason behind his urgency to kiss her. Notice the second time he kisses her she sees the vision of what her life would be like in all its perfectness with him. Jacobs pack brothers imprinted and all of their girls knew as well as they did.
Bella had some hangups in the whole makeup of it, namely Edward Cullens. In short her head wasn't in the right place to gain understanding that she was in fact Jacobs "imprint".

message 11: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I've been thinking about possible ways to make sure we have a good list. It may not be kosher, but for the first time we open up the nomination process for 650 people, I want to test the waters. How about this: I put a limit on the number of books that can be nominated--say 40. Then I will take YOUR nominations first (because I know how much you all procrastinate) before I open it up to the general CR masses. That way I know there will be a fair number of decent nominations already in the pile. I may e-mail some of the regulars who are not in this secret group and ask for their noms ahead of time and give them a little bit of the reason why (without letting them know about this group). Then after I get several good titles (including a few of my own), I will open up general nominations. When we hit 40, I close it. No one will know yours came first. If they give good noms, then the next go-round we'll do it the normal way. What do you think? Am I naturally sneaky or what?

message 12: by Lynn (new)

Lynn Sneaky Sherry... there's a nickname :) I think it's worth being cautious and I don't have any problem with this approach. Are there any unintended consequences I haven't considered?

Lynn

p.s. As an off-topic note, I'm having dinner with Sara Chamberlain in Chicago tonight. Candy was invited but I think she said she was going to be out of town. Sara said she might invite another friend of hers, so I don't anticipate that there will much discussion of CR. We're going to Cafe Spiaggia again to gorge ourselves and finish off with basil sorbet!

message 13: by Barbara (new)

Barbara I think that would be fine, Sherry. But, even if we do it the traditional way, you are the only one who will know which nominations came in the first 40. The only negative that I can think of to your suggestion is that more people will then know what we are doing. And, that makes it more likely that the information will get out.

message 14: by Sherry (new)

Sherry That's why I thought I would open it up here first, knowing how late you guys can sometimes be. I'm afraid I'd get 40 in the first day, then people would wonder why it was taking so long for me to post the list. Just have nominations at the ready, folks. I'll give you fair warning now.

message 15: by Ruth (new)

Ruth That's the only drawback, Sherry. Otherwise it seems good. Let's ponder on this a bit. When are you opening nominations?

message 16: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I haven't thought about it. I probably need to do it a little early this year because I'm having that big 60th party next month and in June I'm going to Spain. WOW, time's flying. Why don't you guys give me nominations as soon as you can and I'll open it up to the rest in about two weeks. Remind me!

message 17: by Lynn (new)

Lynn Even if you get 40 nominations in the first day, who's going to know that other than you? Unless someone has 20 friends who all say "I sent mine in today too", and I don't think that's likely. I'll try to get you my nominations soon, but I don't think I've got any ideas as good as the ones I made last time.

Lynn

message 18: by Sherry (new)

Sherry That's true, Lynn. I guess I'm just being paranoid. And then again, maybe everyone will nominate something good. We can hope.

message 19: by Barbara (new)

Barbara OK, now I'm forgetting how many nominations we are supposed to make. Also, what should we do about Classics Corner? It's probably not as vulnerable.

message 20: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Ricki doesn't know about this conference, so I don't know what to say to her. Just let her know that I'm limiting it to 40? I doubt the Classics will have a problem, either. I doubt that the Reading List will, either, I just want to make sure.

message 21: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Oh, I forgot to say how many nominations. Just two.

Stefany I hope Jacob does find someone, he is a deserving character.

Donna I agree, I do not think Jacob has imprinted on Bella. I think they both love each other, but that they are not destined to be together--at least not in this world.

message 24: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I only have one nomination so far.

message 25: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Uh-oh, I will get them to you this weekend, Sherry.

message 26: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Yikes.

Coming up.

R

message 27: by Sherry (new)

Sherry In a week or so I'll open it up to the general population.

message 28: by Jane (new)

Jane Sherry,

I just e-mailed you my nominations. As a joke, I was going to tack on Carole Higgins Clark and Danielle Steele at the end, but I was too lazy to look up the titles. I was at Borders this evening and saw a prominent display of the new C. H. Clark book, but the title didn't stay with me.

Jane

message 29: by Barbara (new)

Barbara I just emailed mine to you through goodreads mail.

message 30: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Sherry, I agree with you, though, that you should stress that traditionally our Reading List is literary fiction, with the occasional worthy nonfiction included.

Ain't we sneaky.

R

message 31: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Jane, you could have made up any title and I would have still laughed at the joke. Yep, we sneaky all right.

I'll open up the nominations to the hoi polloi sometime next week.
I feel like an elitist snob!

message 32: by Barbara (last edited Apr 13, 2008 05:12AM) (new)

Barbara Are you going to talk to Ricki about opening up the classics nominations? I think she could just discard anything that doesn't meet the definition of a classic.

message 33: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I'll email her soon.

message 34: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Maybe we were worrying for nothing. I haven't received a single nomination yet.

Toria Lynn from what i understand, an imprint is something that no one has a say in, and is inevitable to both sides. but but clearly bella has a say in who she spends her life with. maybe this is another side to the imprinting, or something new altogether?

Stefany it seems like yes, it is an inevitable thing for both sides, and obviously if it were Bella then Edward would be out of the picture. It will be interesting to see what happens

message 37: by Sherry (last edited Apr 15, 2008 09:56AM) (new)

Sherry I think we were worrying for nothing. I've received 23 nominations so far and nary a paranormal romance in the bunch. In fact, they look good. But if any of you haven't nominated any yet, I'd hop to it.

message 38: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Oh, that's great, Sherry.

R

message 39: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Hooray! I'm so happy with the increased participation on the short stories topic that I would have been willing to deal with bad nominations--as long as we vetoed them. But, this makes it even better.

message 40: by Bakeshow (last edited Apr 15, 2008 07:44PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bakeshow If you haven't had a chance, read the Q&A on SM's page. She talks a lot about this- but if you're too lazy- here is how she sums it up.

Jake will not and can not imprint on Bella. Imprinting happens the first time you see someone after you change into a werewolf. If Jake had imprinted on her, he would not have been able to be mean to her that time just outside his house. He would have done everything he could to show her he loved her. He did however, try to force himself to imprint on her that day at the beach when he was staring at her all funny. It doesnt work that way. I'm sure he tried because he really fancies himself in love with Bella.

I have to admit the first time I read Eclipse- I didn't catch Edward's comment that he would be waiting in the wings when someday Jake imprinted on someone else (if Bella should choose Jake). He wouldn't be able to help it. It would not be his choice. I hadn't thought about that, but yeah, no matter how much he loved Bella, if he imprinted, she would be pretty much screwed- a lot like Leah.

message 41: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I think that this group is kind of self-regulating. People would see what books we have on the shelves now (and hurray that Otis made it so I can NOT let people put books on the shelves). By the way, someone actually emailed me and asked if we could put HER book on our shelves. Cheeky! I expect she wouldn't have asked if I didn't have it so the shelves were locked.

message 42: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Somehow, I missed that the shelves were locked. I should have known that the webcast guy, at least, would have put his book there.

message 43: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Well, weren't you all surprised at the quality of the nominations? So now I don't think we have a thing to worry about.

message 44: by Ruth (new)

Ruth I'm such a worrywart. I'm glad to be so wrong.

R

message 45: by Barbara (new)

Barbara I'm impressed too.

message 46: by Em (last edited May 01, 2008 05:19AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Em I agree, Jacob needs someone to take his mind off of Bella. He needs to imprint on someone. Bella would probably feel better then.

Ilene it is rele funny that paul (is it paul?) or quil or one of them imprinted on a two yr old! A 2 YR OLD!!!

message 48: by Em (new) - rated it 4 stars

Em I know, wonder who Jacob wil imprint on. Hopefully someone his own age...

Ilene yea...he deserves it

message 50: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Hart Late to the game, here, but I do think if we run into problems in the future we can just decide to eliminate certain nominations that don't fit our group. This IS our group, right? And I don't mean just the people in our secret group...but this group was founded and has run on certain "book principles" that I think we can stand by. I could go on but I think there are plenty of other places on GR they can go for the other types of books.
