Rachel Mann Even through the second book when Mare was all like, "No, we're just friends!" I've been Cal all the way. Maven was okay at first, but Cal is gonna be the king, so... ya know?! Besides, Cal isn't trying to kill her yet.

I never did ship cal x mare because even though cal is a cool character he just seems like the typical one to be a candidate.

plus I adore villain x hero ships :)"

yaaaaassssss

message 953: by Joyce (new) - rated it 5 stars

Joyce The first two books I was all for Cal, but I think I'm going to jump onto the other boat. Sorry... :( Maven really needs Mare. (Although the third book isn't giving me much hope at all. Perhaps the fourth one will be better.)

message 954: by [deleted user] (new)

I guess Cal because he is pure and Mare has seen all of him while Maven is just a fake.

message 955: by Ramesha (new) - added it

Ramesha Cal. Maven is selfish and mean!!!!!!

Cici Both of them has their own flaws, maven is super power hungry and cal have no idea how to deal with it. I love (and hate) them both equally because they both broke mares heart. More than once.
I wonder if there's gonna be a third character falling for the Mare?

U knw i kinda have the feeling he would do so. He was being gentle, kind and all the stuff but keeping in mnd how cruel his mom was there was no way she wouldn't have rubbed off on him. And later in the series he does more cruel things which made me hate him with a passion.

Allison I flip-flopped between Maven and Cal so much in this book, I can't even decide who I prefer!

message 965: by Asmaa (new) - added it

Asmaa TEAM MAVEN!Cal is so stupid. He does nothing. He is just like his father.I mean Maven is smart. He changed things.I don't even know why the Scarlet Guard are operating anymore.Maven is not going to make Reds equal, but he is not killing them. Thanks to him the war is over.So no one can be conscripted anymore. So they may not be the same as Silvers, but they are going to live.Cal gave her up for power.Maven would never give her back.So DIE CAL DIE!

I have nothing against Cal, but I agree with you! Maven is good at politics and his backstory broke my heart, love him so so much. He is so complex, Cal will never be like him

I totally agree, and i hope Viktoria will end it in that way in which mare doesn´t get one of the boys you know? she is all power herself and needs no man

Brittney Andrews (beabookworm) I am totally team Cal. However, if Maven hadn't viciously killed a child, then I would have allowed him redemption. I don't think Mare is going to end up with a man either way though. Victoria has strongly implied that she isn't rooting for any male. I get the feeling that she's made this into a "I don't need a man book series". I am curious to see how the last book wraps the series up.

message 975: by Kyla (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kyla My ship names were Maren and Mal.

When she first met Cal, I was pro-Cal. When Maven proposed and was all sweet and cute, I was pro-Maven. I kept going back and forth; the dancing and the kiss I was for Maren. Then (view spoiler) stuff went down and I was for Mal. Now, I don't think I want her with anyone.

message 976: by Elle (last edited Jun 28, 2017 04:47PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Elle I really don't like Maven's attitude toward politics and people, but Cal is just so...boring and moody.

message 978: by Bre (last edited Jun 28, 2017 08:48PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Bre Look, I'm a sucker for handsome, dark villains. Maybe that makes me biased. But in my opinion, Maven beats Cal by a long shot.

Maven is such an intriguing character. His mind has been tampered with by his mother, Elara, and he has a soft spot for Mare despite his betrayal and the trouble she's caused him. He is attracted to her in a very twisted way. Jeez, just read King's Cage and you'll know what I'm talking about.

Cal is such a dull character. I liked him at first but then he became so moody and controlling. He went from a great love interest to a curmudgeon that was always there, whether you wanted him there or not. Worse, as the story progressed, attention drifted far from him. Meaning I've drifted farther from him. He doesn't have much personality anymore. He's mostly the Scarlet Guard's living, breathing bulldozer (flamethrower?) now. He's just...uninteresting.

I'm pretty sure Aveyard is going to pair Mare and Cal together no matter what happens, so I doubt Maven is going to get his chance. It's sad to think about, but rarely does the main protagonist end up with the main antagonist. Just take The Grisha Trilogy for example; how did the Darkling and Alina's relationship turn out?

Katherine ugh this is so tough! at first her relationship with maven was cute but there was always a part of me that wanted her with cal! then maven betrayed them and they lived in the woods and I was like yes cal go get it and now that we are getting back some of mavens good side in this confused am I bad am I good struggle of his I cant help but kind of want him too....

I need to read all three again it sucks when you have to wait a whole year for a new book!

Katherine but lets be real is there any actual hope for Maven? she only broke up with Cal cz he wants to be king and I think the author wants us to think that there is suspense but don't we all kind of know that Cal is her one and only? and that shel end up queen as well?

I heard a rumor that there might be two more books, if this is true then maybe she might pick maven for a while but I think shes made it clear and is only toying with us

message 981: by Mina (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mina I dont really have faith in cal anymore after kings cage, but we will see. I actually hope she will write only one more book. I don't think two will be good for the story, it will ruin the serie. I hope she does the last book long instead with a big action filled ending with lots of emotions, commotions and some closure for the characters like Evangeline.

Katherine oh yes Evangeline! In the third book I started to like her and really liked her POVs, I get the sense that her parents are up to something big and evil, cz if you really think about it now that Mavens mom got barbequed Maven is the only bad guy in the series and theres still hope of saving him provided they find someone with the right powers.

The last book is supposed to be the more intense one and I would be very disappointed if the only thing that happened was a battle of bothers for the crown and Mares wedding

Katherine Hona wrote: "Snation wrote: "No, Maven is Victoria's second favorite character after Mare. She said that several times."

frl frl?? good shit."

if you think about it its not crazy, bcz from a writers point of view Maven is more mysterious and complex whereas Cal is an open book

message 984: by Kyla (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kyla Well, I just got spoiled for Elara several comments up :(. At this point, I don't ship Mare with anyone. Mare is a decent character on her own - she don't need no man, Cal is more open and he helped her in the arena at the end, so that is the only reason that I still somewhat ship them. It was really nice, though, that Maven still thought about her and that he could still see a future together for them after all that happened. We'll see what happens - I am hoping to start on the second book in the next week. The story is enthralling without a romance, but the love triangle trope was actually really interesting for once and I found myself enjoying it more than I thought I would.

message 985: by [deleted user] (new)

Definitely Maven, I absolutely love his character. He is one of the only things I like about the Red Queen series. He is a much more interesting and well-rounded character.

Cal, in my opinion, is too sure of himself. He is also (again, in my opinion) a Gary Stu (a male Mary Sue). I think he is boring and vain.

Maven isn't perfect either. He is a coward and a traitor. He is not loyal and could cheat on you. However, he is more loving. I would prefer her to date him.

My point is both would be terrible boyfriends. However, Maven is much more likable for some odd reason. He is certainly more relatable. Cal, however, is just perfect. Perfect is boring and unrealistic. We cannot expect anything surprising in a relationship between Mare and Cal.

**This is just an opinion, don't get upset.**

message 986: by Kyla (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kyla Maven IS super relatable. That's why I liked him so much. Cal is boring - just a stick figure character (if you know what I mean). He's one-dimensional whereas Maven is dynamic.

Katherine I think its a little more complicated. Cal was raised to be the next king so a certain level of "perfection" is to be expected of him. I agree that hes super trained in everything from dancing to fighting which makes him a tad annoying but hey he was a virgin! Also he kind of risked his position to dance with her and steal some kisses lol and also when they leave the palace together and join the rebels hes so lost for so long and became much more relatable than in the first book.

He became an orphan and lost everything at the hands of someone he truly loved and despite all that tried to put on a good face in a place where everyone hates him for who he is so id say hes done very well thus far I like him.

Maven had this spark of darkness from the beginning and when they started bonding thinking they had to get married things were cute but then he started killing babies and leaving notes! I don't think he was at all relatable in the second book he was just a villain.

In kings cage he is redeemed a little bit but we have know for sure that he can be saved before I can truly root for him bcz I feel like were not done with his betrayals. I don't think hel do it on purpose I think he cant help it

Although it did piss me off that Elara could "delete" his feelings about his brother who he loved all his life but his one week crush was too strong to be erased!!

Katherine also Mare is getting to my nerves a little. I'm tired of reading how fierce she is and her only flaws that's she too brave or too caring about the cause and shit, when I finished kings cage I was like WHERES THE NEXT ONE but now that ive had time to think things though I'm actually more exited to read about Evangeline who made a huge 180 flip in her story and character. Mare is getting a little predictable

message 989: by Mina (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mina Yes we have the exact same opinions! I don't really like cal but still in a weird way I do. And I totally agree with like everything you just said! Hah

Katherine I think Cal has great potential as a character and would make a very good king but I can also see why Maven is so intriguing given how unpredictable he is.

from now on I wanna see more of Evangeline, mare is starting to remind me of Catniss from the hunger games, the lightning girl - the girl on fire/mocking jay kind of thing

Of course when I start reading il be all up in her business and bite my nails to see what she does but for now I'm calm

Katherine Mina wrote: "Yes we have the exact same opinions! I don't really like cal but still in a weird way I do. And I totally agree with like everything you just said! Hah"

message 993: by Bre (new) - rated it 4 stars

Bre Let's all just face it: Mare is a very, very bland character. If you put her in a room with several other YA heroines and label them all as such, it'd be difficult to point her out. The way she looks, the way she speaks, the way she acts, her personality, her as a being--they are too similar to every other typical Young Adult protagonist. LIke someone else said in the comments, I'm tired of everyone calling her "fierce" and "brave." Those aren't unique or descriptive qualities.

Other than that--and I'm quoting Cameron right now--she's very selfish.

So if I'm going to be frank here, Maven and Cal (to some extent) are 85% attracted to Mare because of her rare and powerful ability. Cal learned to like her personality along the way. That's at least healthier than Maven and Mare's relationship--it's all based on power and fascination. Maven loves her power and her reputation, not her. Not really. It's extremely unhealthy.

Ultimately, that's why they'll never be together. They wouldn't work. Maven is power-hungry, driven, and a collector. He can't believe that Mare has slipped out of his clutches so many times, so when he finally catches her, he is intrigued by her. He locks her up and watches her squirm. He enjoys it. It's sick, no?

So as an individual character, I can't help but love Maven, a well-rounded, deeply scarred person. But together with Mare? That would fall apart faster than you could say, "Electrokinesis."

message 994: by Bella (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bella I'm team Maven! I think that there is still good in him. I also think that Maven really does like Mare, but his mom is making him think that his feelings are just confusion.

message 995: by Bre (new) - rated it 4 stars

Bre Oh, and also? I just calculated the results from this page only. The tally looks like this:

Cal=13

Maven=15

Kilorn=2 (lol)

And a couple of undecided people. I don't know what the other pages look like, but from these posts, I think I can gather the winner. You guys mostly preferred Maven.

Rebekah Rohrback I've read the whole series. Honestly, it seems as though they're equal. At times, I freaking hate Cal, other times, Maven is the devil himself. To say that Mare goes through a hard 6 months some point in the book is an understatement. But. . . I can't help but love both of them.

Natalie Definitely Cal!! After you finish Red Queen it is obvious who she should be with, same with Glass Sword.
