                 The Hero by Robyn Carr

In a moment of desperation, Devon McAllister takes her daughter and flees a place where they should have been safe and secure. She has no idea what is around the next bend, but she is pretty certain it can't be worse than what they've left behind. Her plan is to escape to somewhere she can be invisible. Instead, an unexpected offer of assistance leads her to Thunder Point, a tiny Oregon town with a willingness to help someone in need.

As the widowed father of a vulnerable young boy, Spencer Lawson knows something about needing friendship. But he's not looking for anything else. Instead, he's thrown his energy into his new role as Thunder Point's high school football coach. Tough and demanding to his team, off the field he's gentle and kind...just the kind of man who could heal Devon's wounded heart.

Devon thought she wanted to hide from the world. But in Thunder Point, you find bravery where you least expect it...and sometimes, you find a hero.

Lara | 2335 comments 1.What was your first impression of Devon with her uniform and long braid ? I thought she was brave and rather desperate. I wasn't worried about her being meek and brainwashed, but rather that she'd do a lot of stupid things from fear.

2.When she thought about the compound and the family , I had a different image from what it turned out to be . I imagined a place with 50 people living a sort of Amish life . I didn't expect it to be as icky as it turned out to be !! What sort of women would accept such a life ? A desperate one ? I think people who are looking for someplace to belong would be attracted. Also, I think these types of places typically have a really charismatic leader, so people feel important and needed, and maybe even special.

3.As it turns out the men don't have anything to do with the women living there , only Jacob is their "Brother" and the others are just a sort of bodyguard! If Jacob is running an illegal operation how can he trust new men all the time and let the others go ? Isn't it risky ? I thought that was pretty weird. I was expecting to hear that the women were expected to service all of the men. But, it sounds like they may have been more of a harem for Jacob. Eew. And the various men being around is creepy. I wouldn't feel safe in that situation.

4.Laine,the girl who helped Devon get away , could she be an undercover agent ? How did she arrange the car and backpack ? She says she arranged it at the farmers market. But, I also wondered if there wasn't more to it and if she was undercover.

5.It's the first time we're reading Rawley's POV , how do you like him ? Is inside his what you thought it would be? Rawley is a real crotchety man. I'm surprised he's so willing to be obviously kind. He has hidden that type of thing in the past. However, he's gotten to know Cooper well, so may feel more comfortable showing his true nature. But, as I recall from the first book, his goofiness was really based in a desire to help without accepting any help himself.

6. Is Spenser going to be "The Hero" ? And he started by eavesdropping !LOL , of course he redeemed himself by helping in cleaning her house ! He is already attracted to her but no reaction from her yet .Isn't it too early for him after his wife death ? So far this book has really focused on Devon. The last book switched PoV a lot and had several different dramas running at the same time. I prefer this one so far, even if things are a bit slow to develop. And, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Spencer doesn't turn out to be a hero, as I figure there's bound to be some drama from the cult before too long. I was thinking about his wife's death. She was dying for a long time, so it isn't as fresh as it would be if she had died suddenly. Also, at the start of the book it had been 6 months since she died. By the time Devon is cleaning her place it's been at least another 6-8 weeks. So, it's close to a year. And he's not on the market, he just keeps thinking about her and seeking her out. So, it isn't a conscious effort to date her.

7.I'm thinking things are going too easy for Devon, she got a job ,a house, her driver license,... , something bad is going to happen , right ? Absolutely. One things I've noticed about this series is that there can be a ton of drama.

8. Should she have gone to the police now that she know what's really going on in the compound ? I think there was a good reason Laine told her not to go unless necessary. I agree that increasing police presence could trigger Jacob's paranoia into something more desperate and violent. However, I'm glad that Rawley (and Spencer) is aware of her past so that if anything happens someone will have some context for her.

#1.interesting, exactly opposite mine!

#3.Yes I thought they were all "brothers and sisters ". The harem was extremely icky but a bit less.

#5.yes I agree.

#7. Yep tons of drama

Chris (cdavies1951) | 312 comments 1.What was your first impression of Devon with her uniform and long braid ? I was really curious what had brought her to this. I thought she must be desperate, but brave to get away.

2.When she thought about the compound and the family , I had a different image from what it turned out to be . I imagined a place with 50 people living a sort of Amish life . I didn't expect it to be as icky as it turned out to be !! What sort of women would accept such a life ? A desperate one ? Victims of low self-esteem who are preyed upon.

3.As it turns out the men don't have anything to do with the women living there , only Jacob is their "Brother" and the others are just a sort of bodyguard! If Jacob is running an illegal operation how can he trust new men all the time and let the others go ? Isn't it risky ? More about the drugs than the women, I suppose.

4.Lain ,the girl who helped Devon get away , could she be an undercover agent ? How did she arrange the car and backpack ? I sure didn't think of that, but that's probably it.

5.It's the first time we're reading Rawley's POV , how do you like him ? Is inside his what you thought it would be ? Haven't read about his previous persona, but he seems very kind.

6. Is Spenser going to be "The Hero" ? And he started by eavesdropping !LOL , of course he redeemed himself by helping in cleaning her house ! He is already attracted to her but no reaction from her yet .Isn't it too early for him after his wife death ? I was having a hard time determining if it would be Spencer or Scott.

7.I'm thinking things are going too easy for Devon, she got a job ,a house, her driver license,... , something bad is going to happen , right ?The cult will probably find out where she is. Maybe they'll take her daughter.

8. Should she have gone to the police now that she know what's really going on in the compound ?Absolutely! She's crazy not to.

message 31: by Lara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lara | 2335 comments @Chris,

#2. I agree. It's interesting how self-aware she is that she can recognize that she was broadcasting her victim status.

#7. Yes, it's clear that Jacob wants the daughter. Given the human trafficking charges, it makes me wonder if he doesn't have some nefarious purpose in mad for her. Especially since he has children by many women. But then, it may be is ego and need to control things as well.

Chris (cdavies1951) | 312 comments 9. Rawley went to farmer market to investigate, was it wise? Were you worried that he might give himself away and put Devon in danger ?No, I wasn't worried - he seems sharper than that. I thought he might find out more.

10. Did you like the wedding? Was it something you would do?Sounded pretty nice, and no bridezilla.

11.I 'm so happy RC didn't use Scot as a way to make like Spenser jealous like he did with Mac .Not a question really ;)

12. I liked their dance but why did he kissed that way ,like a teenager ?it was really awkward but sweet . What did you think?Pretty sweet and a little clumsy.

13.I didn't think they would come all the way to thunder point to search for Reese and Maria , didn't Rawley lay it too thick ?He was obviously fishing for info about Devon. I thought he might do something with the phone number.

14.Finally Spencer got his act together and he's wooing Devon correctly ! The phone , the lock ,the pizza and finally the date ! Was their relationship development believable ? I thought it was believable buy agonizingly slow.

15. Haahaa Miss Benjamin and her skimpy running attire ! Did she really think it'd work ? Pretty pathetic.

16. Wow Rawley has money to buy one of the lots !!!!!!!!I didn' see that coming !I don't know his history, but I gather everyone thinks he's broke.

Silvia ShoSho's Questions for Chapter 1-6

1.What was your first impression of Devon with her uniform and long braid ?(view spoiler)
Perhaps someone timid and a follower, had lost her individuality.

2.When she thought about the compound and the family , I had a different image from what it turned out to be . I imagined a place with 50 people living a sort of Amish life . I didn't expect it to be as icky as it turned out to be !! What sort of women would accept such a life ? A desperate one ?
Desperate, lonely, low self esteem type of women.I think Jacob hid his intentions so Devon didn't know what she was getting into. She was alone and desperate for companionship and a family atmosphere and he seemed to provide it at the time. Little did she know! Also she liked the companionship of her "sisters" so I think she may not have run away so soon had not Jacob physically abused her, that may have been the last straw.

3.As it turns out the men don't have anything to do with the women living there , only Jacob is their "Brother" and the others are just a sort of bodyguard! If Jacob is running an illegal operation how can he trust new men all the time and let the others go ? Isn't it risky ?
Jacob probably offered them a cut in the profits of the illegal activity. Bought their silence! But still risky!

4.Lain ,the girl who helped Devon get away , could she be an undercover agent ? How did she arrange the car and backpack ?
That's what I was thinking! Some other woman must have escaped and reported the activity or one of the males blabbed to an outsider and now there's a sting operation going on! Hope so!

5.It's the first time we're reading Rawley's POV , how do you like him ? Is inside his what you thought it would be ?(view spoiler)
I love Rawley! He must be the Hero with a capital "H"! He was kind of ornery but always dependable and honest in the first books but now we see his caring and gentle side, especially with Devon's daughter! Green bread and green pie crust indeed! LOL!

6. Is Spenser going to be "The Hero" ? And he started by eavesdropping !LOL , of course he redeemed himself by helping in cleaning her house ! He is already attracted to her but no reaction from her yet .Isn't it too early for him after his wife death ?
I think Rawley is the Hero because if it wasn't for him what would have happened to Devon and her daughter? Maybe they would have been picked up by Jacob or one of his guards or maybe a rapist or worse!! But I like Spencer too, a good guy! He hasn't had any affection for quite some time due to his wife's illness, so no it's not too early, life's too short! I'm sure he's going to do what's best for him and his son.

7.I'm thinking things are going too easy for Devon, she got a job ,a house, her driver license,... , something bad is going to happen , right ?
Oh I'm afraid so! That Jacob is going to come back in the picture, just you wait!!

8. Should she have gone to the police now that she know what's really going on in the compound ? (hide spoiler)]
probably she should report him if you're looking at it from just a legal view but she's doing what she thinks is best for her daughter and that's to keep her away from Jacob and that lifestyle! Who knows what hornets nest she would be poking if she reports him. Given her age, I would have done the same thing not having a realistic outlook on life or the maturity at that stage in my life!

message 34: by Lara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lara | 2335 comments 9. Rawley went to farmer market to investigate, was it wise? Were you worried that he might give himself away and put Devon in danger ? At first I was concerned, but as his actions were described I was reassured. I'm starting to wonder if Rawley won't be the hero of the title.

10. Did you like the wedding? Was it something you would do? Well, it's not what I did, but I did like it. The purpose was a celebration with people who cared about them, and it was.

11.I 'm so happy RC didn't use Scott as a way to make like Spencer jealous like he did with Mac.Not a question really ;) Me too. I'd forgotten about how that had progressed. But agree that I was relieved that it never became an issue.

12. I liked their dance but why did he kissed that way ,like a teenager ?it was really awkward but sweet . What did you think? He was overcome, and it was cute and a bit funny. He is intelligent and while it's been a while, he certainly didn't attract his wife with that kind of behavior. I think he's just so surprised by his attraction that he doesn't know how to act.

13.I didn't think they would come all the way to thunder point to search for Reese and Maria , didn't Rawley lay it too thick ? I was surprised too, but it was 2 women and almost 2 children all at once. Jacob would be frantic. As for Rawley's comments, I think it depends on how they were said. If they were made casually, "This is a small town, so they'd stick out. Give me your number in case I see them" then it wouldn't sound too contrived. I did have a little niggle about that myself. But then, he really hadn't seen them, so that probably showed.

14.Finally Spencer got his act together and he's wooing Devon correctly ! The phone , the lock ,the pizza and finally the date ! Was their relationship development believable ? He's a really good man. That was clear from the previous book. So, I can believe it. She needs a bit of taking care of, and he'd been taking care of his wife for years. So, it's probably something he's comfortable doing.

15. Haahaa Miss Benjamin and her skimpy running attire ! Did she really think it'd work ? It was crazy. I can't believe that a teacher would be able to get away with that. Or think she could. It was so blatant, but then some men like that. Perhaps she thought it would work because he's an athlete--you know, more physical and less intellectual?

16. Wow Rawley has money to buy one of the lots !!!!!!!!I didn' see that coming ! Neither did I! He sure keeps things close to his chest. Cooper's reaction was pretty funny though. I'd probably have been laughing along with Mac.

Silvia 9. Rawley went to farmer market to investigate, was it wise? Were you worried that he might give himself away and put Devon in danger ?
Yes, very wise. Check out the enemy, reconnaissance! There's always a chance he could give himself/Devon away but better to know what the enemy is up to!

10. Did you like the wedding? Was it something you would do?
I loved the wedding. Informal but very welcoming to all. I'd love it. My wedding was very small. A few friends and family in our new house that was just built. There wasn't even any furniture in it since we hadn't moved in yet! We met with the furniture movers the morning we returned from our honeymoon!

11.I 'm so happy RC didn't use Scot as a way to make like Spenser jealous like he did with Mac .Not a question really ;)
I agree. There was no use really. There was instant attraction on Spencer's part and Devon was attracted when she saw Spencer tossing a football with Landon. So there was no need for any added conflict there. It'll come soon enough from somewhere else in the plot and not in the romantic way!

12. I liked their dance but why did he kissed that way ,like a teenager ?it was really awkward but sweet . What did you think?
I was surprised but I think he was anxious to show her how he felt, almost stake his claim. It's a good thing he did since the good doctor was also starting to think about taking it to the next level from employer/employee to asking her on a date. Devon was surprised and kind of put him in his place, although more gently than I might have! LOL! But she liked the feelings she felt when he kissed her so his fast moves worked!

13.I didn't think they would come all the way to thunder point to search for Reese and Maria , didn't Rawley lay it too thick ?
No, I don't think Rawley was to blame. I think Jacob searched in nearby areas because he probably thought they couldn't have fled too far because Maria was pregnant and there was three which might have hindered their speed of travel if they had to hitch hike. Also he was more desperate to get Reese back because she held an important position in the cult, helped with medicinal side of things and seemed to be a leader of the women.

14.Finally Spencer got his act together and he's wooing Devon correctly ! The phone , the lock ,the pizza and finally the date ! Was their relationship development believable ?
Yes! Everyone in Thunder Point seems to have come from some kind of dysfunctional relationship or situation, so considering everyone else this is par! Spencer was ready, Devon wanted it, why put off the inevitable? If people want to talk, let them! Their friends will stand by them.

15. Haahaa Miss Benjamin and her skimpy running attire ! Did she really think it'd work ?
Apparently she thought it would work...but it didn't, so hahaha! I'm catty aren't I?! LOL! Good for Spencer, and it was nice that Devon got a chance to see Spencer wasn't fazed by her!

16. Wow Rawley has money to buy one of the lots !!!!!!!!I didn' see that coming ! (hide spoiler)]
Like Rawley said he didn't really have anything to spend his money on so he was able to sock money away! I liked Cooper's response about he paid for Rawley's dad's funeral. LOL!

ShoSho (shoshost) | 12263 comments ShoSho's answers to Silvia's questions

17. Spencer and Devon aren't wasting anytime at all getting to know each other intimately! And Spencer is already declaring his love! Do you think it's just a little too soon for the lovemaking and the love declaring? LOL!
No I think it took them long enough ! What I liked to see was a little bonding between them and the other's child

18. How do you think Cooper's parenting skills went when he picked up Austin from the airport especially when Austin asked him about who he was going to sit with at school and when the subject of grades came up? and Cooper's reply? I remember how it was for me when I was the new kid, what about you?
I think he handled it very well ! I was never the new kid at school :D My parents are still living in the same house since I was 2 years old so I went to the same schools

19. Do you think Cooper should have been the one to tell Austin that his dad, Spencer was dating Devon? What about Spencer asking his in laws not to make Austin sad by their grief over his mom's death and that he couldn't let Austin visit Texas if it was going to make him sad? How do you think they'll treat Devon when they meet her?
No I really wanted to see some talk or a scene between Spence ,Austin and Devon . We never got to know how he feels about his father getting married .
I think it goes with the theme of the book that they's accept her with open arms

20. What was your first reaction when you first read about a dark colored sedan pulling up in front of the clinic. Did you think it was Jacob at first?
For a second I thought it was Jacob but then quickly figured they were the FBI.

What about how agents "McGrump and McGlower" (LOL) treated Devon? Mac's reaction was great wasn't it?
I liked that Mac stood with her and didn't let them intimidate her .

21. What about Devon's reaction when she saw Reese? Do you think Reese may come into play in the future in the Thunder Point series? I know I have a theory!
Let me tell you something ! If there is a single person in a Robyn Carr book ,you can be sure that they'll get their own story :D What's your theory , Silvia ?

22. Gina's daughter Ashley is getting to know her dad Eric and it seems he's looking to buy an old service station. It looks like he might be another permanent fixture in Thunder Point. What did you think of Ashley's reaction when he told her he was thinking of moving there? How do think Gina & Mac will respond?
Can I grumble a bit here ? I like to see characters that are not 100% good or 100% bad ,in this book there was no gray ! Either all the characters were saints with a halo or they are pure evil like Jacob. So I was pretty sure they would accept him as they did . BTW next book is Eric's story .

24. What do you think about Spencer's reaction when Devon asked if he would take care of Mercy should something happen to her? Do you think he's regretting his relationship with Devon? And Devon's reaction? And what about Cooper eavesdropping on their conversation and his advice?
He could have handled it better but after the year he'd had , it was too much for him to think about loosing another person he loved .

25. Oh no! Jacob took Mercy when Mrs. Bledsoe was taking care of her. What do you think of Rawley leading the way to get her and the way he took charge? And Spencer's reaction and his realization of what she went through?
He's The Hero ;) How did Jacob find them ? I really really really wanted to know that . I'm deducting half star just for this !!!

26. Jacob is letting Laine leave and of Laine's reaction? What about Mercy? Did you think that Jacob got what he deserved?
No the author took the short way by killing him off ! I wanted him alive and punished ,he had the potential to be a very great evil villain .

27. Do you think Devon should forgive Spencer, after all, he did push her away with no explanation, feigned the flu, that was lame! He explained to her why he did what he did, was it good enough? Is he sincere? What about her reaction? What would you have done?
I think the last few chapters got watered down , it was like the author got tired of writing and finished the book as fast as she could .I wanted something more out of their relationship and getting back together . I'm not saying it was bad just that it wasn't enough

28. Gina and Mac met with Eric, Ashley's dad, regarding his plans about possibly moving to Thunder Point. Were you as surprised as I was when Gina took Eric to her backyard?
Yes the party surprised me , I though it was too much

29. Did you like how the author ended the book with the status between Devon and Spencer? How would you rate it? I know I can answer: I loved it!!
I liked that part .At least it was HEA and not HFN ! I'm giving it 3 stars ,it was a 4 until Jacob kidnapped Mercy , it went downhill for me ! I'm looking forward to Eric's book .
