WndyJW https://unbound.com/

Unbound is a press and a crowdfunding platform where readers choose the books they want to support at various reward levels. Unbound publishes or provides publishers and authors support for fiction, nonfiction, poetry, humor, and coffee table art books.

Unbound founder John Mitchinson also hosts, with Andy Miller, the fantastic podcast Backlisted.

Some noteworthy books from Unbound are The Wake, Help the Witch, Mr Beethoven, The Tomb Guardians, Salt Lick.

Publishers Unbound works with are Henningham Family Press, Bloomsbury, Cambridge University Press.

It’s fun to look through Unbound’s website and discover live projects to support, send in payment and several months later or longer, a book you supported arrives with your name in the back.

WndyJW Poguemahone arrived today, it’s free verse, which I still don’t understand the point of. Rhythm I guess. It not only looks to be a good story, but it provided my devilish grandson a new retort that only he and I know is Gaelic for kiss my arse. You can imagine how delightful this is to an 8 yr old boy.

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13434 comments I recently received the latest from Henningham Family Press from Unbound, The Lost Spell translated from Amharic, which I think is the first from that language I have read.

David Henningham’s own book, which was at one stage goi by to be published by Weatherglass, seems to be struggling for funding though, so if any one wants to fund it:

WndyJW I was interested in The Lost Spell, but never made a decision to buy it. Did you enjoy it?

I’m sorry to see Foulness is only 37% funded.

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13434 comments I haven't read it yet - plan to do so soon.

WndyJW I regret not ordering it when I could. I liked the Ethiopian style binding.

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13434 comments Mine doesn’t have that. I probably went for the cheap option!

I would have liked to sponsor Foulness, but I was a little reluctant to commit to spending £20 on it - if there was a cheaper basic package I would definitely be tempted.

One Unbound project I did support for non-literary reasons (i.e. crosswords) was Cain's Jawbone, a puzzle that I still haven't seriously attempted, but one which recently became the subject of viral interest thanks to Tiktok.

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13434 comments The Unbound First project is worth supporting. They solicited funding to publish two debut novels by writers of colour. There were c50 books submitted and two have now been selected for publication:

WndyJW You're much smarter than I, Hugh, I know better than to even attempt that!

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13434 comments The Lost Spell is noticeable as well for mentioning coronavirus (it was published originally in 2013). Of course Covid-19 wasn't the first coronavirus (MERS and SARS are as well as other types that cause the common cold) but one for the conspiracy theories nevertheless!

WndyJW Wow, that’s interesting.

WndyJW I ordered The Lost Spell. I couldn’t find shipping to the US on the Henningham Family Press site so emailed David Henningham, they now sell their book through Etsy in the US. www.etsy.com look for HenninghamPress.

David | 3885 comments Has anyone read Poguemahone? It sounds intriguing but also 600+ pages.

message 16: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13434 comments Not me for obvious reasons but also doesn’t sound sort of book I would enjoy. I wonder if it will feature on Goldsmiths though in which case I would read it.

WndyJW I have Poguemahone, but haven’t started it yet. It’s 600 + pages, but it’s free verse so the actual text is narrow columns on each page, probably less than 300 pages of the text was written the width of the pages.

Sounds intriguing, if a little daunting, look forward to seeing what you make of it.

WndyJW I’m looking forward to it as well, but who knows when I’ll get to it.
