Just having a catch up on here.

Please keep things friendly here. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but I prefer them to be friendly opinions. This is a place to relax and chat.... hopefully!

Anyway.... Sweet Magnolias, Virgin River are nice to watch if not a bit on the sickly sweet side but I wouldn't read the books in a month of Sundays. I couldn't cope with all that sugar!!

The JWG documentary was really interesting and was the Jimmy Saville one for any Brits here.

I've tried watching the adapted version of The Staircase but it's boring me.

Is anyone watching The Shining Girls on Apple TV?

No way, is he really?! I thought he was in a Danish prison somewhere or am I behind lol

I've been getting quite into The Staircase and am waiting for the next episode to come out on Thursday. I think Colin Firth has nailed Michael Peterson's accent.

I haven't watched the Jimmy Saville one yet. I think I need to steel myself for that one because he's just so vile isn't he? I think he's honestly got the sort of face of a horror movie villain. I watched Louis Theroux's documentary where he revisited his original one and it made me shudder how arrogant Saville was.

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments Tinder Swindler was so crazy, and people fall for things online all the time!

Vicki, you must have been out there when it was going on, that would have been crazy.

There was one serial killer couple around my area when I was a kid and it has stuck with me so much. Paul bernardo and Karla Homolka - so disgusting.

message 54: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis I remember that couple, Dana. With the sister right?
They were vile!

Yes. disgusting!! She's out too, living her life with a new husband and KIDS, can you imagine?

Hope you guys are having some nice weather for the weekend. It it went from winter a couple weeks ago to hot. No such thing as spring anymore around here.

Sophie | 1126 comments Shocking. Some people shouldn't be allowed to procreate.

We had a glorious Saturday in London but it rained all day yesterday and it looks a bit uninspiring outside today too.

I'd love the weather to be consistently good from now on, but as long as it's sunny on 5th June it can do what it wants for the moment. My daughter is performing as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations at Buckingham Palace that day so we're keeping our fingers and toes crossed for fine weather!!

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments I finished last night my May pick Solo=Solo by Jack Higgins 3* 5/29
The story was well crafted and I liked this author's writting style very much. I'm still no fan of vigilantism, didn't like the characters very much and disliked the ending strongly. I'll consider reading another book by this author if I find something that sounds interesting but won't be sad if it won't happen.

I'm still working on my April book (Fałszerz=The Deceiver) and hope to finish it in the next couple of days but will concentrate on my June pick (W głębi lasu=The Woods) first as I'm looking forward to reading it and have a possibility to get it back to my father on Thursday.

What I can't believe is that they can't charge him with anything for inseminating them with his own sperm!! (As of the making of the show they were up to 90+ siblings. In a 50 mile radius! You would have to ask for blood tests before a hookup!!)

message 66: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 1126 comments Omg I watched this last weekend and it blew my mind. The fact that he couldn't be charged with anything was baffling to me and asking Jacoba not to say anything so that his wife didn't find out was shocking.

Right??? How come you can't get him for fraud? Also, in some states you can't marry if you're first cousins, yet all these kids were created in the same general area. Plus he did it to his own daughter!!

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments Omg, I haven't watched it only heard things but now I need to. his own daughter??? YUCK

Yes. It was a horrifying 90 minutes. Especially since for some reason the law had no punishment. Also apparently he belonged to a church that seemed to want more white children in the world.

Oh god, that sounds so terrible. I saw there's a new (?) documentary series about Warren Jeffries on Netflix too, those stories are so horrifyingly fascinating to me as well. Sad

I finished my May read, The Boy from the Woods (Wilde, #1) by Harlan Coben , I thought it was just okay. I have never read a anything by him previously but I think my expectations were high. Does anyone have a favorite of his I could try next?

message 71: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis Dana, that's a bummer that the HC book didn't knock it out of the park for you. I have read all of his and I have loved most of them.
I would recommend you try
Gone for Good by Harlan Coben Gone for Good
or
Tell No One by Harlan Coben Tell No One

message 72: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 5526 comments Dana and Vickie Willis I’m a huge fan of Harlan Coben

message 73: by Dana (new)

Dana (dkmckelvey) | 623 comments Thanks Vicki!! I want to try Tell No One as that is the one I have heard about the most.

message 74: by Agnieszka (new)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments The slow beginning/build-up in most of Coben's books is what I struggled with in all but two books. I listend to Caught by Harlan Coben Caught and read Deal Breaker (Myron Bolitar, #1) by Harlan Coben Deal Breaker (though both were library copies = in German).
As I'm struggling with my current one (for the same reason again) I'll see if my library/family have some other of his books in the hope this will help (and I'm generally no fan of audiobooks) :-D

I find "thriller" type books harder to listen to on audiobook, I just never like them as much!

message 76: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I haven't read any Coben books yet. What is your advice for a first one?

message 77: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 5526 comments Kirsten I think you should read all of the Harlan Coben books because they’re all very good books

message 78: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis Kirsten wrote: "I haven't read any Coben books yet. What is your advice for a first one?"

If you haven't read any I would start at the beginning with the 1st published.
He has stand alones AND a series - I love his Myron Bolitor series but they aren't the same as his stand alones.
I would start with the stand alones

message 79: by Christine (new)
