Happy April everyone! To kick start April, we are going to read a nice light spring read by venturing into children's literature. This is our first kids read in this group, and I am so excited about it!

Ghost Squad by Claribel A. Ortega. Coco meets Stranger Things with a hint of Ghostbusters in this action-packed supernatural fantasy. For Lucely Luna, ghosts are more than just the family business. Shortly before Halloween, Lucely and her best friend, Syd, cast a spell that accidentally awakens malicious spirits, wreaking havoc throughout St. Augustine. Together, they must join forces with Syd's witch grandmother, Babette, and her tubby tabby, Chunk, to fight the haunting head-on and reverse the curse to save the town and Lucely's firefly spirits before it's too late. With the family dynamics of Coco and action-packed adventure of Ghostbusters, Claribel A. Ortega delivers both a thrillingly spooky and delightfully sweet debut novel.

Join me for a discussion on Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram on April 28th at 2:30pm. Happy reading!

Jodi Crawford | 20 comments What a fun read! I love all things ghosts and haunted so this was a treat. The friendship between Lucely and Syd was adorable and of course Babette was fabulous. Besides the creative storyline of ghosts, fireflies and fighting evil, I liked the way the heavier topic of financial troubles/possibly losing ones home, was dealt with. Middle grade books often have this way of dealing with heavier topics with a nuance that allows a younger audience to see these topics in a way that makes them think about what they would do if they were in that situation, and just helps to have an open discussion & communication without it feeling so ineffable.

I'm so happy that you enjoyed the book! Lucely and Syd's relationship is adorable. They are able to really lean on each other which is helpful to both.

The book, as you say, does a great job of handling heavier topics about grief, financial troubles, and split parents in a way that is both sensitive but easy for middle graders to understand.

I can't wait to talk about it with all of you!
