Mat E. | 6 comments The story tells about the cheetah getting the leftovers because he was lazy and was last in line. I think it is a peddler handing out attributes. Cheetah gets a chirp none of the birds took, a leftover set of dogs' claws, spots that streaked when he cried about getting the leftovers. The last day, the peddler was giving out speed, the cheetah got up early and was first in line. That's why he's the fastest animal on the savannah.

Mat E. | 6 comments No. I should have mentioned I memorized this for my 5th grade English class about 27 years ago. Interesting how something like that can stay in head so long.

Or a story in a longer book?

Jade Michaelson (goodreadscomjmichaelson06) | 289 comments I remember this book! It talked about how all the other animals got something special except the cheetah. I'll look for it.

Jade Michaelson (goodreadscomjmichaelson06) | 289 comments There seem to be different variations of this from what I'm seeing. At least one of them was in the Highlights Magazine. It might have been in a reader issued to your class. But here is one variation that kind of sounds like what you're looking for.

Florence | 683 comments Is it one of the tales In Just So Stories by rudyard Kipling? Maybe in how the leopard got his spots?

Mat E. | 6 comments @Jade, This is not quite the same story, but has the major key points I remember. It seems like Ms. Roberts also read it in the past and, like myself, wasn't able to find it again. I'm glad she decided to post it to share. The Good Reads community is incredibly proficient at finding obscure texts.
Thank you!
