SOLVED. Juvenile Historical fiction book about a boy who meets a ghost/ ‘shade’. [s]

The main character (boy) moves to a new house and sees a ghost in the window (ghosts are called shades). He meets the ghost and they become friends. One of them is named ‘Will’. There’s a secret about the barn, something that can be solved with a sieve. The ghost has his own backstory where he or his brother was shot by grapeshot from a cannon during the war (takes place in America). Read this around 2012.
