Only read first chapter // Girl works in book/gift shop but lives in a lighthouse, works for a lesbian couple who buy her gifts and everyone in town hates her because she probably killed people during a storm?

I read this as the "first chapter" thing in the back of a book last year. I also cant remember which book, and have flipped through all my books to try and find it, without luck. As I said, this girl just finished highschool and now works in the book shop/gift shop run by a lesbian couple. The one woman is away frequently for her "job", it was set up as something mysterious, Im sure it is relevant plot wise? Also this one is the one that mostly buys the main character the gifts, fairly certain it was a vibrator and saucy lingerie. The "popular" people come into the bookshop and looka t the main character with evil eyes, and judge her, and the main character comments on how its probably because of her boyfriends death, but it doesnt get furtehr explained/explored in the first chapter.
If my memory serves me right, there was something about merpeople in the "sum up" sentence before the intro chapter.
Also it is written in first person.
