RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Happy Birthday, Larry...thank you for all you add to TC...you are a friendly, intelligent presence in a world of airport delays, Cornhusker controversies, and Warren Buffet steak dinners...may your birthday be everything for which you wish, sir!

A simple celebration, a gathering of friends; here is wishing you great happiness, a joy that never ends.

Happy Birthday Larry!

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Larry's from Nebraska?

Happy Birthday, Larry, and many many more!

message 4: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Nebraska, of all the gin joints in the world.... Oops wrong thing.

Happy Birthday Friend! Hope you get that job!

message 5: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Thanks, everybody. I appreciate it more than you know.

Gus, I'm not from Nebraska, I just live there.

I'm not from here
I just live here
grew up somewhere far away
come here thinking I'd never stay long
I'd be going back soon someday

it's been a few years
since I got here
seen 'em come and I've seen 'em go
crowds assemble, they hang out awhile
then they melt away like an early snow

onto some bright future somewhere
down the road to points unknown
sending postcards when they get there
wherever it is they think they're goin'

I'm not from here
I just live here
can't see that it matters much
I read the papers and I watch the nightly news
who's to say I'm out of touch

nobody's from here
most of us just live here
locals long since moved away
sold the played-out farms for parking lots
went off looking for a better way

onto some bright future somewhere
better times on down the road
wonder if they ever got there
wherever it was they thought they'd go

hit my home town
a couple years back
hard to say just how it felt
but it looked like so many towns I might've been through
on my way to somewhere else

I'm not from here
but people tell me
it's not like it used to be
they say I should have been here
back about ten years
before it got ruined by folks like me

we can't help it
we just keep moving
it's been that way since long ago
since the stone age, chasing the great herds
we mostly go where we have to go

onto some bright future somewhere
down the road to points unknown
sending post cards when we get there
wherever it is we think we'll go

Stephen (stephenT) I would say, good poetry, Larry, but then you'd tell me it is a song lyric.

message 7: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) James McMurtry. One of my heroes.

message 8: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Thanks, Bun.

message 9: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Good poetry, James McMurtry.

message 10: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Actually ... heh ... it's a song lyric.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, you live there now, so technically, you're from Nebraska...

Félix (habitseven) Gus wrote: "Well, you live there now, so technically, you're from Nebraska..."

Until I move somewhere else.

But I'll never be a Nebraskan.

message 13: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) No, Larry is of the Hudson River School of Guys. Upstate and all that. Probably lived in what they call villages up thar in NY.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

And I'll never be a North or South Carolinian. We're on the same boat, my friend. The blood from the streets of New York City still flow through my hardened veins.

message 15: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Yankees, the both of ya.

message 16: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I'm not from here, I just live here ....

message 17: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Excuses, all of you. Typical northern aggression. hehehehehehe

message 18: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Spoken like a Texan.

message 19: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) It's true, I was born there. I live in Kentucky, which was torn apart because flatlanders said, secede! and the mountains said we don't want no part of your flatlander problems! and the river towns were like, no way, and make us the firing line?

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Damn fuckin' right. Ya gotta fuckin' problem wit' dat?

And as I like to say to my Southern neighbors, "We kicked your asses before, and we'll do it again."

My neighbors looooooooove me.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments LAAARRY!!!

Happy birthday, friend! :)

Have a girly ninja cake:

message 22: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Well, it's like this. I was raised in Texas, and in Texas what was more important than the war of northern aggression, was Texas History! In the fifth grade we had a class called Texas History. That is all we studied. I didn't know anyone still gave a shit about the civil war until I moved to Kentucky.

message 23: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Thank you, Heidi. I LOVE it.

message 24: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Well then Larry. Eat it. hehehehehehehehhehehehesnicker

message 25: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Or, if you love it so much why don't you marry it

message 26: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) It's too nice to stick a knife in it.

message 27: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Don't you notice the throwing star in her girlie hand? You think she won't slit your throat after burying that throwing star in your forehead? Dude! Knife it, save yourself.

message 28: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) It's true. I have a true dilemma here.

message 29: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I know this is going to break your collective hearts, but I have to go for a while. Ta ta, happy almost Birthday Larry the not quite Nebraskan but has lived there long enough to be one.

message 30: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Three years does not a Nebraskan make.

message 31: by Matt (new)

Matt | 819 comments Happy early birthday Larry! Do the waiters at Old Chicago sing for people's birthdays? (heh heh...)

Did I miss something in another thread as far as Stephen saying "Hope you get that job!" earlier in post #4?

message 32: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Thanks, man.

Actually, the servers there just make fun of you on your birthday a little more loudly than usual.

And yes, I'm holding my breath (almost literally) after an interview yesterday. But now I don't want to talk about it anymore for fear of causing waves in the space-time continuum.

Larry! Happiest of days of birth to you!

message 34: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Oh that's just too perfect, Sally.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

Excellent Sally.

message 39: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Alright! Right on time, too.

message 40: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) The train cake theme is very good. However, Larry is turning 97, not 10. Isn't that the right age there Larry? :-D

message 41: by Félix (last edited Oct 08, 2009 08:49AM) (new)

Félix (habitseven) Age is, after all, just a number. A mile marker or sign post along the way. Like Burma-Shave.

message 42: by Stephen (new)
