You can ask anything you want. Oh, I've been around the block a couple of times, Sher.

Aw! Dammit! Would you look at this...that bakery mixed up the orders. AGAIN!
All i'm sayin' is that this had better be chocolate...

First of all, I'd just like to say that I was absolutely AMAZED at the excellent condition of the hat. When I took it out of the bag and its casing, I couldn't believe just how well-preserved it's remained - no rotting or disintegration whatsoever, especially spectacular when you consider it's at least 60 years old, and likely considerably older than that.I put it on my head and it fit perfectly. I have the same size head as my grandfather did. :) The most noteable observation about the hat was the strong scents that came from it - fresh tobacco and gumbo. I never knew my grandfather to smoke anything, so the tobacco scent was quite a surprise. The gumbo scent was not surprising at all - he made THE best gumbo I've ever eaten in my life! My faves were his chicken & sausage gumbo and his shrimp & okra gumbo (I'd pick out the shrimp).
Also worth mentioning (and I've mentioned it to Larry already) - I was mistaken about my grandfather's employer all my life - I thought he worked for Union Pacific Railroad. He didn't. He worked for Southern Pacific Railroad.
So, without further ado, the photos of my grandfather's train conductor cap as promised:

Neat hat, Eidi!Happy Actual Birthday, Larry!

And may I just say, geez, there are a lot of Thomas the Train Engine cake pictures out there!
That is a sweet looking conductor's hat, Heidi.
I'd wear that hat all the time, if I had one like that. And wear nothing but the hat. In public. At a train station.

Thanks Jacks and Gus! It's the first time I'd taken it out of the bag in all the time I've had it in my possession. My mother gave it to me a couple of years after my grandfather died. She's as sentimental as I am and was very close to her father, so I'm not surprised that she decided to keep it for a couple of years. That's exactly why I take great care of it. I also have an oven pad that my great-great grandmother hand-crocheted with scraps of fabric. It's also well-preserved.
Absolutely Heidi, picture of you wearing that hat. I love how it still retains the grandpa smell. *verklempt*LARRY! It's your day and a great day it is in the grand scheme of the universe!
Alright, that's overdoing it a bit. :) Still, it's a great day because it's my friend's BD!
HAVE A HAPPY!

Happy Birthday!!!! You Know How important your letters and your friendship are for me. Thank you for being such a GREAT person. Because of you this world is a kinder place. I wish you Health, Wealth, long and happy life, and may all your dreams and ideas come true!
Since no one else has bothered to wish Larry a happy birthday, I guess I'll get the ball rolling. Happy birthday, Larry!
...and since you've probably eaten too much cake already, I'll simply offer you this mint. It's wafer thin.
EDIT: I really hope that's chocolate under the thumbnail. Otherwise, ew. Happy birthday, Larry!
