SOLVED. YA Humor: Loser protagonist gets diagnosed with illness and decides to leave the hospital and take a bizarre road trip with his impossibly short friend. [s]

I know that the protagonist was a loser teen who doesn't have much going for him (not many friends, C-average student, only hobby is smoking weed in front of the TV) ands then gets diagnosed with an illness. His school, filled with kids and teachers who never cared about him, hold a half-hearted pep rally (?) for him.

His dad thinks he's a disappointment and his mom never gets anything done, like the scrapbook she claims she's working on. He also has a sister around his age, who is kind of an ass.

When he's in the hospital for said illness, he decides to leave with his new "friend," who is extremely short and wants to get as far away from their town. They end up at a bus stop and travel all the way to New Orleans, where they meet a super tall drag queen.

I stopped reading there because I lost the book and never found it. I feel like the title was something quirky, and the author was a woman.
