YA comedy book about a NYC middle schooler hosting an exchange student from Japan

I think I read it when I was around 10-12 years old. All I remember is that it's set in NYC, the kid goes to a NYC public school, the grandpa of the narrator owns a sandwich shop or something. The exchange student is from Japan, I think his name was like Yoshi or something. I remember the exchange student was a good skateboarder and wore silver sneakers. I think this was just the plot of one book, I believe it was a series that all featured this narrator.
