This has been bugging me for years! I read a book around 2008-2011 about a family living in India. I believe I remember that the younger prettier daughter was being arranged a marriage to an older abusive man. The MC was the older sibling who was not found very attractive and was yet unmarried and the family was ashamed of her because the older sibling is supposed to be married first. I distinctly remember a part of the book where they are washing out their reusable period rags with a washboard. I feel like I remember the MC falling in love with someone but he was not approved by her family. As I’m writing this I am starting to recall that the family has to marry one of the daughters off because they are in some sort of financial issue? The MC wanted to run away with her love but instead decides to marry either someone her family approves of or the abusive man herself and the younger sister does not have to marry the abusive man. That is all I remember

Are you sure this is YA?Are both girls under 18?
I don’t remember anyones ages/age ranges. And I am 99% sure it was a young adult book (I was around 11 when I read it)
Was it historical fiction, or set in the modern day?
