Iseriously think this is it. Will ILL a copy to read and reportback. Thank you! Edit: yes, this was the book I remembered.
MC wrote: "Could it be Island Keeper by Harry Mazer?"No, the story I want, she doesn’t deliberately run away. She intends a shorttrip while waiting for grandma to come home.

Thank you! Yes, this was the book I remember. A bit didactic, and I had erased the older brother as the main character in my memory, but I was happy to find it.

The story opens with the girl, who is about 12, arriving at a relative's home unexpectedly. She is by herself, dropped off or took a bus, or similar. She has a heavy suitcase with her. I think probably she was going there for summer vacation, and some family emergency caused her to arrive early. Nobody is home when she arrives, so she throws her suitcase in the bushes for security, then walks down to the shore where her relative (grandmother?) has a boat. She takes the boat out for an excursion, and accidentally gets stranded somehow on an island. She has very little food or water, and there's relatively no shelter there. She struggles to survive. For some reason, I vaguely remember that she ends up with a younger boy? I may be imagining this. I can't for the life of me remember how she gets rescued, except I think she does it for herself, without being saved by anyone else.
