chapter 1-5 (view spoiler)[ mark is sent up to mars with a crew and is supposed to spend roughly a month up in mars.when a sandstorm hits their area,mark is hit by an object and the team leaves him behind fearing him dead.he regains consciousness and using his knowledge as a botanist and a mechanical engineer,plants potatoes,makes water and figures out a way to rig things up to the HAB to stay alive minimum a year,maximum the roughly 4 years the next mars mission will take place (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 1-5: (view spoiler)[I really enjoy Mark's inner monologue. For being stuck on Mars, he's surprisingly optimistic. I would be crying in a corner lol. After seeing the movie though, I just picture Matt Damon. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 6-10 (view spoiler)[ mark continues to keep a lot of his day to day activities on mars.i can't imagine having to a custom ones self to the smell of shit to survive,but then again that is probably why it's called the survival instinct.its interesting to see how he comes up with solution to every thing even up to getting a communication with earth set up (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 11-15 (view spoiler)[ mark finally manages to establish connection with earth and his team is finally informed about him still being alive.his commanding officer feels guilty and an unplanned incident cuts his food supply in half due to all that happened.NASA took a chance to ignore the checks and ends up messing up the plan to get food to mark in time.i cant imagine the horror of that (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 16-20 (view spoiler)[ NASA director teddy refuses to take a risk to help save mark and insists on taking the chance of iris 2 as in his opinion it only risks one man's life instead of 6.however the rest of the team especially mitch the flight commander and annie the pr manager thinks he is a coward and i agree with them and this makes me wanna strangle him and tell him to stop being an ass.at least they found a way to save mark (hide spoiler)]

Omg yes!! So much agreed. It also wasn't as overly done as some "sarcastic" characters lately, and Mark actually had a personality/character outside of just sarcasm.

I did not know this going in and I was definitely in for a ride. There were so many moments where my heart just STOPPED for a second or two.

We see how much effort was put into that probe and all the strings that had to be pulled for it to happen on time, and it STILL did not work! Although, to be honest, I had kinda given up on it working since we saw Rich get an idea before launch, and I could tell that Rich's idea was going to be the main point of the story. (hide spoiler)]

The Ending:
(view spoiler)[I honestly really loved how it ended. It wasn't just a happy one, but one that came about due to the sacrifice of so many dreams back on Earth. It was bittersweet almost. Yes, Mark, our hero, was saved, but at such a huge cost. The rest of the crew gave up another year or so of their lives, so many space projects were tabled/had to be put on hold for another few years, etc etc. But that made it even more interesting, as an ending, to me.
