It's time to starting thinking about some fun and interesting categories for our Group Reads!

The ideas gathered from this thread will be used to build a list from which categories will be randomly chosen.

Each season's Group Reads will have 2 fiction categories and 1 non-fiction category. The year's categories will be posted in advance so Group Reads nominators will have time to research and select appropriate books. For more information about the nominating process, please see task 20.10 in the Rewards of the Challenge. As always, polls will be set up each season to choose between the nominated books for that season's Group Reads.

Please include a short definition or description with your suggestion.

Choices from the past years we would prefer not to repeat:

FICTION:
Urban Fantasy
Police Procedural
Paranormal Romance
Retellings
Anthology
Comedy
Fantasy originally not written in English
The Book Was Better Than The Movie
Southern Literature
Love Triangles
Parallel Timelines
Cabin in the Woods
Continuation Novel- fiction in the style of an established series, produced by a new author after the original author's death/retirement.
Young adult science fiction
Bad Girls - Lady Pirates, Thieves, etc.
Locked room mystery
Knights (could be Arthurian legend or historical fiction set in Middle Ages)

Feel free to get creative and submit your ideas here! This thread will be open for ideas until March 31. We're looking forward to seeing what you come up with

Fiction:
Historical Fiction (could specify a time period eg 1900-1930s or 19302-1950s or pre 1900)
Cosy Mystery
"Chick Lit"
Written by a "celebrity"
Based on a real person/event - but fiction
Written in the last 100 years, 50 years, 5 years, 1 year etc
Animals
Murder Mystery

Fact:
Royal Family memoir/biography
Adventurer (eg climbed Everest or walked the Amazon)
Art
Science
History - could specify an era eg 1800s, 1900s, 2000s,
Event within your lifetime (or my lifetime!)
Animals - the story of jockey or a famous cat or ....

I like the idea of using "Earth, air, fire, water" - so fact could be the tales of a geologist or adventurer, Air could be the story of a pilot or hot air balloonist, Fire could be a fire fighter or somebody who suffered burns or ....
Could use the same theme for the fiction too ....

Frankly, I'm tired of the last few years of war, unrest, rudeness, and Covid.

How about reading a book with an optimisitic viewpoint? Could be fiction or non-fiction categories

I can understand and appreciate your feelings on that. One of my favorite genres is Historical Fiction and LOVE those centered around WWII and the Civil War. Hence the reason I suggested that topic. Some of them in that category are "feel good" books as they have a HEA. : )

Yes, Robin, I've read a lot of those, too. And I'm sure I can find something no matter what the chosen categories are!

I agree!!! At least we are given options each season : ) just in case one category is an absolute no lol One positive thing for me with the categories is that it pushes me outside my reading box sometimes and I have read some different genres/books that I wouldn't have chosen to read on my own accord.

I agree with you some of the categories in the past have been downright depressing

Just interested what is Rural mystery?

message 15: by Marie (UK) (last edited Mar 24, 2022 12:20PM) (new)

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 3940 comments I find some of the categories either very narrow or I simply don't know what they mean

Humour - no biographies
What about
Classic English Fiction

Or something that might give a wide range of options
- proper name in title
- profession in title

Non Fiction - Criminology / Forensic science

Pretty much the opposite of urban mysteries... to me.
Several articles have been done about "rural noir", but I was trying to open it up to more types of mysteries. There are ones from cozies to grittier ones centered around drugs, etc.

In the UK, it might include many considered "village mysteries".

message 22: by Marie-Anne (new)

Marie-Anne | 950 comments Agreeing with others posted, I'm leaning towards the lighter side for a while. I was thinking about catergories away from the content/author categories and go with what's on the cover, for example
- cover dominated by a single building
- cover with lots of people
- cover with fantasy beast/s as dominant feature -- could be generic of specific, for example dargon or sphinx
- cover showing jungle, savanna, desert, icescape
- well-known piece of art/architecture on cover
etc.
