Anusha (anushakm) | 7 comments Hello everyone,

First, I would like to clarify that I am aware about the book-club meeting that takes place every month. But, the sad part is that I have little interest in the books that are suggested or maybe I am not able to relate to them.

Therefore, I just thought I may as well start a new thread, calling for book-nerds who may be interested in the same books that I am. Here are the books I felt we could cover in this year.

1. Haruki Murakami - Norwegian Wood, Kafka on the Shore, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World

2. Jojo Moyes- The Last Letter from your lover

3. Gillian Flynn - Dark Places, Sharp Objects

4. Liane Moriarty - The Husband's Secret, Big Little Lies

Please let me know if anyone would be interested in taking up this reading with me. We could even tweak the list if we have other mutual choices.

Vimal Thiagarajan (veeti) | 11 comments I've got all 3 of Haruki's numbers thats in your list, but couldn't get myself started on them. So I'm game for a parallel read if you intend to start with Norwegian wood.

message 8: by Pravinth (new)

Pravinth | 1 comments I have read a few murakami books but have yet to read hard boiled wonderland. Also have been meaning to read another gillian flynn novel after gone girl. That book went to some really dark places in my mind, pun intended.

If I can get over my Kurt Vonnegut phase, I am planning to read both hard boiled wonderland and dark places over the next month. Would be awesome to have someone to discuss with after that...

H.R. Krishna | 2 comments Hello,
I am not an active member of this group but I do keep track of the monthly meet-ups. Although I have read few books penned by Haruki Murakami, I wonder how many of you guys read science fiction/fantasy. I greatly enjoy hard fantasy and sci-fi, and it would be great if we can do a meet-up for sff readers.

Yes, I have been planning to get started on Murakami :) Right now, I am reading 'Mime Order' by Samantha Shannon but I'll be done with it in a couple of days.

That's great. But, I am planning to start on Norwegian Wood since it came highly recommended by a friend. Then, 'Hard Boiled Wonderland' maybe :)

Hey there! You could start a new thread calling for sff-nerds. That might turn out useful

Cool.I'm currently reading 'Right Ho Jeeves' by PG Wodehouse and will be done with it in a couple of days as well. Will take up Norwegian Wood after that.We could then join Pravinth for Hard boiled wonderland next month.

Great.I started with it on Monday and m half-way through it now.Started off thinking it was a love-failure tale, based on the cover and the initial pages, but soon realized it was much more complicated than that.Haven't read anything this transgressive before, but I like the simplicity with which Murakami has handled the narration so far, which masks the complexity of his characters. He hasn't made any attempt to weave a story, throw in ingenious plot elements or impose himself on the reader.Toru,Naoku,Nagasawa and Midori do keep me going. Will be done with it tomorrow I think.

This is my first Murakami, but in so far that I have read I can see what you've said.No thrills, intrigues or suspense; just the emotional connect that he establishes has kept me glued so far.

Very nice to hear about your experiences in the meets.I'm in an isolated place and hardly find a soul to discuss about the books I read, so I just keep reading on and on. One thing which really worked for me was to choose a radically different author after every book I read.To read PG Wodehouse, follow it up with Dan Brown, then Dostoyevski, then Rider Haggard, then Danny Wallace.Different eras, different styles, different genres. I've found it stimulating and it has increased the time I spend with books.Worked for me, it may work for a group as well.If I could think of other approaches, I'll edit the post.

Vipassana Hello!

Clearly this is the wrong place to post, however I can't find an appropriate thread. I read about meetups on this thread and would love to join. Is there one that will happen this month?

"Usually" the info is posted here https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
but looks like there is no info on this month's meet. If you are a member you would "normally" receive info through an automated system. But keep checking the link above, it's usually on Sundays, either on the 2nd or 3rd Sundays. Hope to see you there !!!
