Missing actor, ex-gf searches, screenplay, dies in pool

Hey people! I'm going to try as well.. my gf has read this book years ago and she can't remember the title. It's a book about an actor called Nicky Green (?) who goes missing. His ex-girfriend decides to try and track him down. There's a lot of flashbacks in the book about different points in their relationship. She does find him in the end and he is basically writing a screenplay about how she is crazy. He dies by falling into an empty swimming pool. Cover was black with some sort of white picture on it. She read it in the early 2000's but doesn't know how old the book was. Thanks!
