Today's/Tonight's results:Geelong Cats (available) v Collingwood Magpies (Tech)

7.10.52 (Q3) 8.11.59
11.12.78 (Q4) 10.11.72
It wasn't a pretty game and really the Pies should have won it. They had much more of the play. But ..... it's so good to see them get a taste of their own medicine after all their narrow wins this season. Go Cats!!!
Tonight's result:Fremantle Dockers (available) v Western Bulldogs (Blastro)
0.1.1 (Q1) 5.5.35
4.3.27 (Q2) 6.6.42
7.5.47 (Q3) 7.11.53
11.7.73 (Q4) 8.12.60
The Doggies started magnificently but once the Dockers got a sniff, that was it.

AFL 2022 FINALS FIXTURE - WEEK 2~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Friday September 9
Second Semi Final: Melbourne v Brisbane Lions (in Melbourne)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Saturday September 10
First Semi Final: Collingwood v Fremantle (in Melbourne)
If punters could lodge their tips by midnight THURSDAY September 8 (your time) it would be a great help, although I can accept them up until 10.45am FRIDAY (your time) if absolutely necessary.
Thank you Val for your comments on the Swans victory. It was a great evening and one I thought was going against us early in the third quarter when the Demons quickly kicked 3 goals reminding me of the burst they put on in the final last year against the Bulldogs. However the Swans dug in and defended from that point heroically. Buddy got loads of criticism but the fact is he tied up the magnificent May creating space for the likes of Papley and Heeney. The do or die defence towards the end of the last quarter was beyond belief and just hoping we can make the Final as it has always been a huge ambition to for me to attend at least one.
Tips for this week a little predictable but cannot see many surprises but it will be interesting to see if the Magpies can bounce back from the huge disappointment for them
last Saturday. They had a huge chance and blew it but I expect them to be too strong for the Dockers.
We were talking about what an asset Tom Papley is and she told me when she used to go to South games as a child, a big thrill was getting Max Papley's autograph. I asked her if he was still alive and she didn't know. later that evening she texted me to say that he was (now aged 82) and that he had two other grandsons who made it to AFL status.
We went to SandSong on Saturday as well. So fortunate that the Swans were scheduled for Friday. What did you think? We thought it was amazing.Thank you for sending that through about Papley's Grandfather. I had no idea he played for Souths and he must be proud of Tom
I'm not a fan of ballet or modern dance in general (although I have enjoyed some of Chunky Move's performances) but I love Bangarra. Somehow the combination of their athleticism and their authenticity just gets me every time. They are a credit to Australia's cultural life. Tonight I'm off to the Hamer Hall for Judith Durham's memorial service. Next week I've got the M.T.C. preview of their 2023 program - fingers crossed it's as good as (most of) this year's offerings have been. I'm very disappointed that the redevelopment of the State Theatre means Opera Australia's productions will be on hold for the next year or two. They've scheduled 4 smaller productions but none appeal to me - Philip Glass in Sanskrit is too erudite for me. Hopefully Victorian Opera will have a good program - so far this year I've enjoyed The Who's Tommy, Brecht/Weill's Happy End and, last week, Il Mago di Oz (The Wizard of Oz) at The Palais. I'm also seeing their production of A Christmas Carol in December. My only other event this month is Michael Ball et al doing Can You Hear The People Sing at Hamer Hall - I'm a sucker for anything to do with Les Mis.
Val have you any idea why they are demolishing the Arts Centre which as far as I can see is perfectly good for many years to come? We love it even though we keep getting lost but that just reminds us of the Barbican Centre in London which we frequented all the time.Very disappointing on the opera front although I do see they have a concert performance of Tannhauser next year.
Eventually there will be a new art gallery somewhere behind the existing gallery. I think when the plans were first mooted some years ago, it was envisaged that you'd be able to walk through (parkland) from the Hamer Hall through to the Sumner, Recital Centre and the Malthouse. A friend and I will be at the MTC's 2023 launch next week and it will be interesting to see where their shows will be housed next year - they can't all be at The Sumner surely.
Hi Val that explains it. Thought it odd it was being demolished. Thank you for sending the link on the plans.I remember when Covent Garden closed for redevelopment and that was a very hard time living without it for about 3 years I seem to recall. Somewhere I should have a tiny piece of the original curtain which was sent out to all members when it closed down. Victoria and I went to a concert with Domingo as the main star when it closed
What a thoughtful memento! And to see Domingo! I have seen Cecilia Bartoli, Angela Gheorghiu, Anne Sofie Von Otter, Renee Fleming, Sumi Jo and my very favourite soprano, Inessa Galante (all in concert). On the male side, only Roberto Alagna (in concert) and Jonas Kaufmann (singing Andrea Chenier in concert as well as his performance in Lohengrin earlier this year.
sorry late Val my brother's been I'll and had heart surgery yesterday.Thanks for the reminder.
Turn up result tonight:Melbourne Demons (TheFoe) v Brisbane Lions (David)
3.6.24 (Q1) 1.3.9
6.8.44 (Q2) 3.4.22
8.11.59 (Q3) 9.5.59
11.13.79 (Q4) 14.8.92
You would have thought the Lions were gone for all money at half time but poor kicking by the Demons and a never-say-die attitude from Brisbane saw them home in the final quarter. Melbourne were very lack lustre; that defeat by the Swans must have demoralised them!
Tonight's result:Collingwood Magpies (Tech) v Fremantle Dockers (available)
4.0.24 (Q1) 0.1.1
6.6.42 (Q2) 2.2.14
8.12.60 (Q3) 4.4.28
11.13.79 (Q4) 9.5.59
The first quarter was quite exciting just because of the frenetic pace, but my interest tailed off after that as it became one way in Collingwood's favour. The 20 point margin flattered Freo as the Pies had most of the play. Again, poor kicking let them down, but I suppose that's the pressure of finals footy.
Our tipsters' results for Week 2:Anita - 2 - 7 (6+1)
SussexWelsh - 2 - 11 (5+6)
David - 2 - 12 (2+10)
Blastro - 1 - 33 (33+0)
Suzy - 1 - 33 (6+27)
Tim - 1 - 36 (28+8)
Steve - 1 - 38 (38+0)
Tech - 1 - 39 (36+3)
Val - 1 - 46 (44+2)
Duke - 1 - 56 (48+8)
Philip - 0 - 75 (41+34)
Lez - 0 - 119 (56+63)
Well done Anita with your last minute forecast. Another $15 for the Mirabel Foundation.
Two games next week:Friday, 16 September
First Preliminary Final
Geelong Cats v Brisbane Lions (in Melbourne)
Saturday, 17 September
Second Preliminary Final
Sydney Swans v Collingwood Magpies (in Sydney)
If you can get your tips done by midnight Thursday September 15 that would be grand. The very latest is 10.45am (your time) Friday. And don't forget, I need the margins for both games.
Collingwood in total command. However I really wonder how Ginnivan can still get away with staging high tackles Really after all the fuss and he still does it
Would love to but flight issues are making it tough. Think I will watch from here although heart tells me to go.Have succesfully registered for Grand Final ticket but this goes against all my instincts. I did not realise you would be expected to register for a ticket BEFORE you reach the final.
Going to the Bledisloe Cup game on Thursday so hopefully that will take my mind off Swans on Saturday.
That's the problem isn't it? Even if you could get a flight, there's no guarantee it won't be cancelled or you getting bumped to another flight. Good luck to the Wallabies on Thursday night and to the Swans on Saturday. Please dispatch the Pies. I don't mind the team too much but the fans change from perfectly normal people to rabid dogs once inside the ground. I wonder if David Mundy would have got such a generous farewell had the Pies lost???
You are right about their fans and that is why I have always hated Collingwood. We that and Eddie McGuire. Great career for Mundy and he did get a good send off.Flying at the moment is a lottery and an expensive one at that. Thats why we drove to Brisbane and the Sunshine coast last month for our friends 60th.
To fly in and out for one night just seems too hard although 2 years ago wouldnt have thought twice about doing it. We are Queensland Reds fans and for many years flew from Sydney for every game at Suncorp.
Therefore will sit and cheer the boys on from here but anticipating a very nervous evening.
Today I happened to be playing an album of old music-hall songs and one was "Goodbye Dolly Gray", a song I always associate with my Granny because she (born in 1885) used to tell me about watching soldiers marching to and singing it when off to serve in the Boer War (this was in Edinburgh). Of course, a few bars in I remembered it was also the tune of "Good Old Collingwood Forever", or as Mick Thomas (quoted above) referred to it, "a tune I've learnt to hate so well".
Tim wrote: "That is very funny Val."As you're not a native Melburnian, you may not be familiar with this ode to "this fair city, in the winter time".
Hey, hey, I see a Melbourne girl on a rusty Malvern Star,
Through the spastic Northcote streets at dawn
See the way her hair's tied back,
Her cheeks so red, a grey coat ragged and worn.
Picture this, a paper boy,
He stands outside a Collingwood hotel
On his back black and white,
He hums a tune I've learnt to hate so well.
But oh oh, won't you meet me
Under the clocks, we'll go walking by the river
Through the mud and through the slime
Are you so surprised,
That I am here, full of cheer
In this fair city, in the winter time.
Well I'll tell you what, it's such a lark,
We'll take a walk down Fawkner Park
And check the health fanatics,
See them, they go jogging there.
Could buy some chips, a piece of flake,
Drive down and eat them by the lake,
I know a shop in Chapel Street
Where nothing could compare.
But oh oh, won't you meet me
Under the clocks, we'll go walking by the river
Through the mud and through the slime
Are you so surprised,
That I am here, full of cheer
In this fair city, in the winter time.
We could find a pub where it is warm,
Study up our racing form,
Hit the TAB, we'll blow our money there, tell me this -
Is there anywhere you'd rather be
Than with me at the MCG,
And if the Saints get done again,
By Christ, I couldn't care.
But oh oh, won't you meet me
Under the clocks, we'll go walking by the river
Through the mud and through the slime
Are you so surprised,
That I am here, full of cheer
In this fair city, in the winter time.
In the winter time, in the winter time
In the winter time, brrr!
SHIT!!!! I really thought there wuz another day to go!! Was gonna do these meself too. Only when I read Foe's abov..."
You did! I think it was 2016, the year the Dogs won the flag. As I said, I don't keep records and the old 'Zon pages are no longer available to us. Philip won the most money in 2016 but that was probably bumped up by a Brownlow winner or tips in Finals. You (and the Dogs) were great winners in 2016!
