Foundation question

I need help finding a book. My father said he read it when he was young, but he can't remember the title or author. He thinks the book began, "The war was over in five seconds, and we lost." It is a sci-fi book where humans have expanded through the universe and an alien/foreign species attacked all of the human colonized planets simultaneously.
