Read it in the 1970s. Young girl lives in a Tyrolean kind of village. People call her "the question box" because she's *constantly* asking how does that work and why does this happen. Her father is in charge of winding the village clock, and "You can't come along on Winding Day!" is the nuclear threat to get her to stop asking questions.

The village, which I'm thinking might have been right on the border of the kingdom, has an alarm system. The clock tower is also a bell tower, and the bell is supposed to go off in the event of invasion. There *is* an invasion, and somehow the girl is the first to see the approaching troops, and also discovers that someone has disabled the alarm. She grabs some object and starts ringing the bell, the attack is thwarted, and her reward is that from then on, every question she asks will be answered.

Can't find it under the title The Question Box, though. Any ideas?

Glad you found your book, Lorna.

I added genre and plot details to the header/ topic title as an example of what we require to help people find a book.
