SOLVED. Semi-autobiographical WW2 story about a child separated from their family. [s]

I read this book within the last 5 years through a book club (who I can now not remember so can't contact them to ask!).

The only things I remember is that the books follows a child who is separated from their family when the Germans come to take them away.

The child goes to a group home at some stage.

The become friends with a Dr. This Dr works at a hospital where they carry out experiments on humans but this Dr is good and doesn't actually want to be doing this but can't get out of it. The child potentially ends up with the Dr at their home?

And the child ends up, as an adult in Australia (Victoria)...
That's all I can remember!
