An old illustrated story published before 1992. It was about 2 children or possibly elf like people that went on an adventure to obtain a dragons tooth for some reason I cannot remember.
I do remember they managed to steal the dragons tooth by sneaking up on it while it was sleeping and tying a rope around the tooth. When the dragon woke up to chase them the tooth snapped off. I don't recall if they had managed to put the dragon to sleep somehow.
The illustration showed the tooth snapped off, it was a rounded tooth, not pointed like modern dragons are shown.
I had a look through all the puddle lane books but couldn't see anything familiar. They also seem to be a different style of illustration from what I remember, thank you for the tip though!
FOR the Goodreads link: There are several Puddle Lane series by Sheila K. McCullagh. The "stages" of the series are not by order of publication, however, but by reading ability (Stage 1 being for beginning readers, Stage 5 for the most advanced readers, etc.) so there's no real "first book in the series." The first books in series 1, 2, 3, and 4 were all published on October 31, 1985.
