I think this series was a trilogy

I remember the covers of the book being vivid images of the soldiers with weapons. A comic like drawing on the cover.

Deals with the Start of World War 3. Set in America

SPOILERS:

I remember Book One dealt with this Elite Group remaining in Washington as per the President's orders and they assist in the evacuation of the Chief Justice and Speaker of the House. A bomb goes off near Washington causing the vehicle to flip and I think one of both die.

They have these special vehicles that they are using to evacuate, which I believed were housed under the White House.

The president is in Air force one and it is believed it has gone down with all lives lost.

These Elite soldiers turn their attention to finding the Vice President and protecting him so he can become the President.

I remember them finding the Vice President and taking him to a bunker maybe Motanna I'm not 100% sure. It then centres around the mystery of someone/group trying to kill the newly sworn-in President. These elite soldiers are protecting him

MAJOR SPOILER

In the end, it comes out the former President was not, in fact, dead but hiding in a bunker by a wealthy industrialist in Switzerland (I think) And the President was trying to return to take back America under his control, therefore it was he who was the traitor.
